James Brown - In The Jungle Groove

You might think you know Janes Brown. You might think you know funk. You don’t fully know either until you have heard this album.

“Originally issued to capitalize on the popularity of Brown's music in hip hop circles at the time, it includes the first album release of the much-sampled single "Funky Drummer" (1969), along with a selection of previously unreleased tracks, alternate takes, and remixes. ” -Wikipedia
this is the funkiest music I’ve ever heard and my favorite album by James Brown by far. The drumming is so damn funky it’s just the jam. There’s one track “The Funky Drummer” in which Brown just unleashes his drummer to groove. It’s a whole track of just super funky drumming like you’ve never heard. Every song just has an impeccable swing and sway and hits just the right notes including the gaps/pause between notes. The guitar and horns are sparse and hit at the perfect timing with perfect pause to give it that super funky sway.

put this on and do the jungle groove!

    sound quality is outstanding.

Thanks @rhythmdevils - enjoying the funk this morning!

Maybe it's not available in the USA (bloody weird if not) but it is in Canada on both platforms, so I added links. Tidal and YouTube Music can stop ringing the shame bell now :)

The Feelies - The Good Earth

Generally a pretty feel good laid back folk rock album. Their sound is obviously influenced by The Velvet Underground. But there’s much more mixed in as well, their sound is very organic and lacks the harsh jarring (in a good way for VU) sound of The Velvet Underground. I keep wanting to say VU mixed with The Wallflowers’ first album (minus the shitty drumming).

it’s got a really great sound to it too, unlike anything else. Very organic and has a bit of that crunchy Americana sound that Fleetwood Mac have.

The Feelies have 4 other albums as well which are all critically acclaimed. I don’t think any are quite as good as this album but they are definitely good and worth listening to. The band went on hiatus for about ten years and came back in 2011 with more great music very similar to their original work. A rarity in the music world. Their last album was released in 2017. That’s about 30 years of continuously making good music. Not many bands can say the same.

I think I’m going to stop linking to Apple Music, Amazon Music and YouTube Music because I don’t think anyone on SBAF uses them. But let me know if you do.

Some crazy awesome French music not available on streaming services for those who buy music. Made with violin and an instrument called a Cabrette which is a type of bagpipe. Really beautiful enchanting music.

That Cabrette is pretty sibilant in my setup haha. Caught me off guard. But very interesting music indeed.

But you're right. It is enchanting in a weird way. The Violin + Cabrette combo is quite mesmerizing; like putting me under a spell. Never listened to this type of music before. Now I know how a snake feels.

Today I learned this is not the music I was in the mood for. :D

I do see why it's interesting and will try again when a different mood prevails. I think I'm still wanting mopey or dark stuff, and those suggestions were also fantastic.

Reminded me a bit of that Celtic fellow with the harp. From Brittany?

    Ondara - Tales of America

Mississippi-Blues-Folk is the best summary I can come up with.

Apparently he was born in Kenya and this music has nothing to do with Mississippi but the sound is there. He dreamt of becoming a professional musician. And started out from scratch 7 years before this album was released, teaching himself to play guitar even. Which you would never guess from listening to the music.

Gorgeous vocals that soar with amazing range and loud, isolated, beautifully recorded bluesy bass lines define the album along with minimal but great acoustic guitar and the usual folk prescriptions make this album pretty unique from anything I’ve heard. It’s not usual to hear folk music with such awesome bass. The whole record is also recorded very well and is just such bliss on good gear. It’s also a good way to test the bass performance of your phones because the bass should not be in the background or loose at all.

    enough said.

Papa M - Over Jordan (song)

Best version of this old song I’ve ever heard. Jesus. Stab me in the heart. This is what bluegrass is supposed to sound like. Not a bunch of dumbasses playing super happy chords as fast as they can.

    Nat Birchall - Cosmic Language

one of my favorite jazz albums right now. Melds (I don’t know jazz sub genres) rather smooth jazz (it’s been called “Spiritual Jazz” online) with Indian rhythms, sounds and instruments, replacing the piano for a harmonium. It’s such a beautiful album. It’s relaxed but never unengaging. It’s full of life and wonder. It’s mystical. My favorite Nat Birchall album of those I’ve heard.

    Sound quality is outstanding.

That's a nice pick! His latest is a Yusef Lateef tribute of sorts that takes the Eastern influence even further. I'm still hoping to see him one of these days.

I saw Bishop on this tour at the Empty Bottle in Chicago, with the late Jack Rose opening which was a treat. Watching SRB was in its own way like seeing Marc Ribot solo. As someone who doesn't really know guitar from the inside, I felt like I was missing multiple levels of what was actually going on. Totally worth it, but I felt like a moron.

    Yams - Gold

A very short album because the songs are only a minute or so each. Which I find very sad because it’s really good.

it’s basically hip hop without any vocals. Just hip hop beats that could easily be full 3/5 minute songs and this would be such an awesome album. But I’ve never heard anything like this (admittedly I hate hip hop so maybe there’s similar stuff I don’t know about)

Great short album to put on for a quick moment between other albums.

Archie Shepp - Let My People Go

Slow, soothing, but exploratory jazz with long instrumental experimental sections and incredible vocals by some old black guy with this incredibly aged rough voice that always sounds like it’s so fragilely constructed it is about to crack and break into hoarse whisper. But never does.

beautiful live recording. The brass and vocals sound incredible.

this is great music to put on when you need something soothing but still mentally stimulating more than something like ambient music is.

cool I’ll check it out. I know less about hip hop than any other genre. Because I hate it. But I like the rhythms.
