This is one of those things that I've always wondered about but never really felt confident about asking back in Changstar, since it may have been something that was considered common knowledge among audiophiles. To cut things short: Is there an optimal way to rip CDs or any major pitfalls that I should be avoiding?

Right now I'm just using my laptop CD R/W drive and foobar's integrated ripping function w/AccurateRip. I admittedly have nearly no knowledge of how the process works on either the software or the hardware side. Would really appreciate it if anyone has any comments.

I personally use the dBPoweramp software to rip my CD's to lossless FLAC with ease. However, I've always wondered if those so-called audiophile-grade CD rippers (physical ones, not software) make a difference. I'm talking about stuff like these, to name a few.

Do using these external CD ripping hardwares make a noticeable different in the sound quality of the files ripped? Or are they all snake oil par excellence?

I also use dBPoweramp to rip my CD's. It is an outstanding program, but it isn't freeware. It's $39 for a single license, but I won a few license in a contest, maybe if you are nice to me I can send you a licensed copy @Aelms :p

I have used EAC for quite a while and like it. Once it's configured it is really easy to use. Nice link to a guide from velvetx!

+1 for dBPoweramp, it's great. Was particularly nice when I was ripping a few HDCDs that I acquired.

I should also mention that there was one damaged CD that EAC was able to rip even though dBPoweramp failed.

Thank you everyone for the help!

I appreciate the offer @The Alchemist but I only have recommendations to good anime to offer :p
Will definitely try out EAC with using the guide that velvetx linked.

Just another thing: foobar had this "dither" option that I never bothered with since I didn't really understand it. Is it something that benefits ripping after all?

While I love anime, an Otaku if you will - I don't expect anything in return - I will give you a licensed copy if after trying EAC freeware you find it doesn't work well for you, but actually EAC should work very well for ripping CD's and it is free.

Never had a single issue ripping using good ol' iTunes, but be sure to enable error correction.

Me too, never used anything different. I just rip everything in ALAC with error correction and I've only had three or four CDs end up with weird popping noises and glitches. Granted, they were library CDs with scratches and crap, and only one of them was one I really feel the need to buy, but I hate listening to something I like and then hearing that godawful digital bleugh. I'm sure I'm not missing out on too much since it sounds good to me. Someday I'll try and get really high quality digital downloads of some orchestral like Rite of Spring and compare between my CD rips, but I doubt there'll be a big difference if it's the same recording and master.
