Anyone want to join in for Pho this Friday? Pinging @BillOhio who's new to town and anyone else who would like to join.

It's kind of like Hawaiian shirt Fridays but instead of wearing a Hawaiian shirt to work, you skip that and meet up with @Marvey and me for really good Pho. The place opens at 11:30a, which is when we arrive because we're ravenous bastards and parking in that strip mall area gets kinda crowded later.

The place is called Feu Pho Kitchen and address is: 11310 Ventura Blvd, Studio City, CA 91604

Yeah. I need a reason to get out of my mom's basement otherwise real human voices will sound too harsh and I won't be able to stand the PP-8s from a zero source impedance amp.

Yeah, I'll show. Been like... 365 days since I had last any bowl of pho, plus I've got a box to hand over to @Marvey anyway. :)

(Oh, and now that you mentioned PP8, I need to contact the next person on loaner list)

Of all places, I didn't think Studio City would have good Pho. This place Feu actually has fantastic broth. Not watered down, with the right mix of spices that you can smell: anise, cinnamon, cloves, rock sugar, fennel, dried sea worm things, etc. One out of every five days, they overdose on the cloves a bit, but it's fine. I'd rather this happen than they watering down the broth - the bones to water ratio is high. Also, Feu doesn't totally skim all the fatty oils from the broth, they leave a little bit for extra flavor. Their speciality BTW is Oxtail Pho. Instead of cheap-ass Hoisen sauce from Ranch 99, they make their own with black fermented garlic. Easily comparable to the better places in Little Saigon in OC, possibly better.

Another thing I'd like to add: parking can be a bitch if you arrive after 11:30am. Circle around these areas to find parking. You can't park in the Sugarfish lot - they have valet and security that will kick you out.

it's true, the oxtail is my favorite but if you're not in the mood to interface with bones and connective tissue, the ribeye is also top notch. not the overcooked garbage you usually get, but rather raw thin slices that you dump in as soon as you get the soup.

Yeah. They hand out the ribeye slices raw. It's not cheap grade E sirloin shit at the typical Pho joints. In general, Pho places have taken a dump in the past 25 years, even in the ethnic hoods. This place brings the state of Pho back up.

I dig the name too. Pho has roots in pot-au-feu from France. Which is almost exactly like pho in the way they cook the beef, but lacks the spices and noodles that they add in Vietnam.

Too bad I don't a flexible schedule. I am like 10 miles away.
Marv's description of the broth reminds me of a pho place in San Jose. But it tastes like shit after a major renovation a couple years back...

A lot of pho places in San Jose turned into shit (my parents live there). When I was living in San Jose about seven years ago, I liked Beef Noodle #1 on Capitol Expressway. The kitchen was open and you could see exposed pots with the broth and flies all over the restaurant. The place was disgustingly dirty, but the pho was good.

What a small world huh. Pho Kim Long used to be pretty good, on Capitol as well near Gay Mall.
Loh yeh moh yeh don't laugh at the Asian accent.

I'd still give Beef Noodle #1 a try. Especially if the low sanitary conditions have been maintained.

I generally feel the pho places in Little Saigon in OC are better. Even then you have to be selective. These places specialize too. Some do a pulverized filet ginger pho, another does oxtail, etc.

I'd skip every place near Tully and Capitol. There are some OK places - but just OK. Twenty years ago, you couldn't lose there. Even the Pho 99 chain was good. Traffic is a nightmare too.

I'd go with the place near the "Gay" Mall suggestion above. Milpitas tends to have very good Asian food, possibly the best in the Bay Area. I always drag my parents up there, if not to a specific place in Cupertino.

Looks like a good spot off Ventura Blvd. Take a group glamour shot when you guys head over to Romance Nail Spa after lunch. +1 to Milpitas Viet joints. At least years ago, there were great spots. Even the little Viet sandwich shops had lines out the doors.
