Just an aside, but I agree that most budget to mid-fi CDPs are nearly disposable due to the transport. Lordy, in the time that I've owned my used SL-1200 I've had 3 (Rega Apollo, Saturn, Marantz CD6003 or 04?) transports fail out of warranty, and both the Regas were controller board related failures. SL-1200 still spins away. For years the only way to get a solid, serviceable transport mechanism was to spend multi-kilobucks on something with a VRDSNEO or similar. Did anyone catch who the transport manufacturer is for the SchiitTransport?

Right, we’re looking at two potential areas of sonic improvement, source AND file delivery. Unison to Unison, yeah I’m all ears.

Interesting video. I've been waiting for their transport, and it's nice to see it progressing. $1299 US is more than I expected, that will be 2K in Canada after exchange, shipping and GST. I was expecting more $799-899US, but it is what it is.

I still spin a lot of CDs. I've almost finished ripping them all and have a digital library as well, but a CD via SPDIF has always been preferred over anything USB in my system. That said, I have not tried Unison. If Unison is indeed better than SPDIF, which many here have said it is, then having a Unison source and receiver on the DAC will be an improvement in addition to the other benefits of a well engineered transport. Of course I'll have to send my Gungnir back to Schiit for the Unison upgrade as well. That is another not insignificant cost of the upgrade.

So at this point I'm taking a wait and see approach. Is the Unison chain worth, say, 2.5K Cdn, or would I be better off just not bothering. It's not really just about a good quality mechanical transport anymore.

They were a little confused about the question about index marks. Someone should send this disc to Schiit to try with the transport. This CD has both index marks and pre-emphasis. Index marks were somewhat used for classical recordings and a few prog rock recordings back in the 80s. Pre-emphasis is also a PITA and I don't know how the transport would or should handle that. The Schiit DACs don't do de-emphasis so getting a full Schiit digital chain to do de-emphasis would require that the transport do digital EQ if it detects pre-emphasis and send that altered data to the DAC.

That page also has a link to a PDF of the liner notes. The liner notes show which tracks have index marks.

Gahhh! That sucks. I love my little Modi Multibit. It's small and easily transportable. It is the DAC I take with me when I travel. It sounds like a Schiit multibit. It's not as good as my Gungnir MB, but it is a Schiit multibit and has enough of that multibit sound to keep me happy when I'm away from home and my bigger gear. This sucks.

My Modi Multibit is still an OG version V1. I'm not the sort of person who opens up gear and replaces chips. Should I panic and buy a V2 chip and figure out how to replace the chip later? Should I panic buy the last of the Modi Multibits so I can have one with the new chip?

I am going to buy a Bifrost 2 Multibit eventually (soon). But it's so much bigger to take as a transportable when I travel. The smaller size of the Modi is just perfect for transportable use.

Replacing the chip is super easy. You don’t need any real technical skills. Just a screwdriver and a little bit of care in not zapping it with static or bending the pins. @batriq made a excellent thread that describes the process in great detail with pics. I think the chip is only $30-$35.

ps. I hear you on the transportable aspect. I just wish mine had unison usb in it. Oh well.

You should buy the chip. It's super easy to do and adds dithering. A worthwhile upgrade to do considering how easy it is.

Well that is a huge bummer. Modi Multibit was the first DAC I ever truly loved, served me well for the first year+ of this hobby. Was nice knowing it was always an option for budget rigs around the house/work...might have to try to snag one before it is gone just to keep it around.

It seems insane to me for Schiit to not have a multibit DAC cheaper than the BF2 in their lineup other than the multibit cards (which with only USB hookup leave a lot to be desired). Sounds like they truly don't have plans to replace it as of now though.

Modi Multibit was like my first true love, 2 years it blew me away until I bought Bifrost2. I sold it but I wish I still had one. Hang it on the christmas tree or something. fare well !

I'm sure there will be a successor of some sort. The whole concept and execution of modibit is just too good.

I love mine with eitr. I'm in the middle of an upgrade run, trying stuff to settle into. I thought of the modibit as a toy when I got it... like it cant be THAT good. Got it b-stock knowing I'd be waiting a while for my SW51+.

And then it changed my whole plan. Higher tier Schiit MB will come when the time is right, but thinking about it now is like having a gorgeous 3 course meal on the table, and not being hungry. After I got the modibit, I kinda just stopped wanting another DAC. Thats pretty crazy to me.

Hopefully Modi Multibit can rest in peace and be replaced by a Modius Multibit at some point. If I recall correctly, the Modi Multibit is one of their only products that uses a 2-sided circuit board (due to lack of real estate). I'm assuming this is what makes it expensive and cumbersome to build. I would think that moving to the Modius form factor would alleviate the space constraints. I'm assuming that they would also use a switcher instead of a linear power supply, as in Modi 3 and Modius. From Jason's comments, it seems like maybe the DSP required to implement the oversampling/special sauce filter puts some pressure on the BOM (in terms of cost). So maybe they would end up at $349 instead of $249. Personally I would be ok with that. Bifrost is still a good ways off at $699, so a hypothetical Modius Multibit could fill a nice gap in terms of price and price/performance. My hunch is that anything like this could take a while as the pandemic slowly winds down over the course of 2021.

random mcd questions (for the US):
    1) Is there a best time of year or even a time of month to get their filet o fish sandwiches?
    2) Is there a set schedule, day/s of month, or other pattern for changing the oil at mcd or is it just "as needed" and hence dependent on how stingy or not the franchisee is / luck of draw? it's not as noticeable with their fries unless the oil is really bad, but with their hashbrowns it's pretty obvious when the oil is starting to go off and completely ruins it.
    3) How come the fries are crispier sometimes and soft at other times even when fresh and is there a way to get them a little more crispy on the outside? Far as I can tell it's not well done fries or not - I've had fries be cooked the minimum amount of time before that were very nice and crispy outside / soft inside and ones that were bordering on well done that were still kind of limp.

Speaking of mcd it's been too long since i've had the breakfast burritos and a mcgriddle (w/ sausage + 50% of the time add fresh egg via mcmuffin eggs).

This is a good 4-part series but I'm just going to link the last video:

Jason seems to be hinting at new Jotunheim with Nexus coming soon but being stuck in COVID production hell at around halfway through the video. Recommend watching the series in full though a lot of good tidbits.
