Disrespectfully disagreeing with all of you except @dmckean44 . Small size & fuck USB = good fit among 2-channel gear where it gets digits from Pi2AES and CD player and outputs analoggies to amp & speakers (and living-room headphone setup when I'm not allowed to use those). In The Distant Future (Flight of the Conchords reference) Modi Multibit will become a classic along the lines of vintage Theta gear. Get yours before it's too late.

I respectfully disagree with this. The form factor of the Modi Multibit is ideal for transporting (ex: toss it in your suitcase on a business trip) or for an office setup (as not to distract the same way a larger chassis would). These are both real world scenarios I've ran into.

The one wishlist item I had for the Modi MB was them to make one with Unison in it. I'm kind of glad they went this direction because now I can go ahead and order Unison upgrades for my other DAC's and not hold out for it, lol.

My Modi MB is in the rotation, via Saga, with a Bifrost 4490 and OG Gungnir MB, and depending on tracks and cans, it still sometimes sounds best. ATM, sounds great with Coltrane and RS1e, from a Valhalla2.

I got it with a Vali2, and that still works, and it's still my favorite to drive my 2 channel system, through a SYS.

I don't use USB for anything if I can avoid it, but even that works ok.

I just wish it came in black.

Don't forget about the Vali 2.

Modi MB and Vali 2 have a heck of a punch in the SQ department and can soothe any beast working hard chained to their desk. Some serious value there. Yes, $400 for a DAC/Amp stack, but there are amps that cost more than this. Even and Asgard 3 with the Multibit card is $400, and with that you are limited to USB input (or pure analog input) only, not to mention no tubes to roll.

I'm not sure what this will do to schitt, but AKM's factory just had a massive fire. I've done some custom designs for people with their parts and I got a call from the rep yesterday saying that the factory would be shut down for the foreseeable future. I know that schitt uses a lot of AKM so who knows what that will do to them. Hopefully they've built up some inventory on the parts.

I read that they predict a disruption for at least 6 months. Still, this will steer many upcoming designs towards ESS and TI. RME also is deeply invested in AK parts.

Wow that is crazy! It'll surely have a big effect on the market. ESS will make good money for the time being, I suppose :)

Maybe a good opportunity for Schiit to do ESS in a way that doesn't suck. Kinda like how Matrix X Sabre Pro didn't suck. Would be interesting at least.

I hope ESS has upped their datasheet game.

Sadly the best ESS dacs I’ve heard we’re MOTU and Apogee, newer chip stuff be damned.

Re AKM: yep, it's a problem. But I don't think you have to worry about us too much.

Yes, the fragmented information we're getting indicates that AKM will be out of the high-end DAC and SPDIF receiver chip business for a long time (some say 1 year, don't take this as gospel.) And yep, we use a lot of AKM DACs and ADCs. Modi, Modius, Fulla, Hel are all pretty AKM-centric. But...we're also pretty paranoid about stocking. Thank Alex for that. So, we're good for about 6 months.

Beyond that, we are in touch with AKM to see if we can bridge the gap, but of course they have other things to worry about right now, so we don't have answers. Also, they may not have any certainty about what they'll be able to deliver for a long time either. So, I am working with Mike, Ivana, and Dave on both mid-term and long-term alternatives to ensure we are not caught out like this again, and so we can continue to build our small, affordable DAC line. We'll see what comes of this.

One thing's for sure, this certainly puts a boot through our cancellation of Modi Multibit. Out of an abundance of caution, Modi Multibit gets a reprieve for the foreseeable future. So something good has come of this...

    ...this entire, crazy year.

Honest question...In the instance of Modi Multibit, would something similar to Massdrop make sense? For example, discontinue it officially to reduce overhead, offer it up in batches and just do, say 100-200 LE if they're prepaid? Not sure how that all works behind the scenes, but MM seems to be in the price/performance range of a lot of drops (solid middle of the road offerings, possible gateway to larger stuff).

I'm one of those people that is on the fence right now, where I don't NEED one (I have both a Bifrost MB and Yggdrasil), but might want one down the line for traveling purposes.

I wouldn't put anything on drop, but that's just my opinion (maybe general sentiment here actually).

If you think you might want a Modi MB why not just buy one. You obviously have the means owning a BF MB and Yggdrasil, so just get it and call it a purchase for the future. If you know you wanna buy it in the future, what difference does it make getting it now or then if means allow.

I think selling Schiit on Drop is paradoxical. Drop is going to want to make money on anything they sell, and I'd imagine there isn't a ton of markup on Modi MB in the first place, so why? Further, the direct to consumers model isn't hurting Schiit, so why change? Lastly, anyone buying audio stuff from Drop probably knows all about Schiit anyway, so it's not exactly a great way to get more brand recognition.

I don't see it being viable, or even reasonable.

    lol.

I am not a fan of the pressed emulsified meat sandwiches myself. Being from Memphis I am halfway offended they called it "BBQ."
