I really don't see a reason to have both as they are more similar than not. 660's I found I could listen to at lower volume level. That might be beneficial to some. I'll probably sell mine

Its refreshing to hear that. I've scratched my head so many times when HFers say they have the HD600 and HD650. There's so much else out there to sample...

Thanks for taking the leap and offering your impressions, @Ray! I'm honestly glad that these are turning out to be so similar to the current HD6xx line. Time to rest easy with my HD650 and keep working toward getting a HD800 to complement it.

@Ray: Was your HD650 used for comparison modded?

    Marv,
Yes I used the modded pair.modded set definitely sounded more open than 660's. 660's vocals to me sounded more forward than 650's

Yikes... That's a downer. I was hoping the HD600S would blow my dick off.

Still very interested in your thoughts. I'd imagine the 650 will be discontinued now

The more info that dribbles in about the 660 the more it seems disappointing to me. In fairness, they should be broken in before final pronouncements are made. Even the differences in pads will effect the signature. Mine will be here tomorrow afternoon.

Head-fi make it seem very promising. SBAF make it seem rather disappointing:D

There's a lesson to be learned there. Someone smarter than me can point out the details. ;)

All a smart newbie has to do is pay attention to resale prices of gear that's praised there and trashed here. The market comes round to SBAFs point of view in a year or two after the hype dissipates. That's proof of who knows their stuff.

Anybody seen the resale values of Ethers and EL-8s? Headphones for which HF shill armies were released at the time of launch :D

People eventually wise up. I remember Marv saying only retards would pay 4k for the Utopia last August. Just a year later 2.5k is market value for a new unit.

    I've learned a lot here.

    @Prydz Still very early.

I have a feeling that some people will say its not worth it while others will secretly prefer it and keep quiet so they avoid backlash.

Also, though @Ray is a longtime SBAF member, it doesn't mean he speaks for everyone. Opinions vary here just like everywhere else even if they are less polarizing compared to HF.

The fact that you don't have to perform irreversible mods on them like the HD650 is already a plus. Not everybody wants to mod. I don't think $499 is a bad price either. It could have been priced higher at $599 or more given the state of the hobby.

While I had fun modding my 650 when I had it, there is definitely an attraction to having it sound the way I want out of the box, without tinkering.

I guess HD660S might be more appealing to us with mediocre amplifiers?
Considering the fact that ive never heard HD650 on what is regarded as a top amplifier, ive most likely never heard its full potential
