This is why I wanted to get them to someone with more experience explaining sound. Marv makes a great point if your shopping phones and don't own the 650's I'd agree the 660's would be the way to go.bottom line is I don't feel these offer much more than what the modded 650's do.

Could be another case of HD800/HD800S where people still prefer the modded HD650 over the HD660S.

The question is: What’s the modding potential for the HD660S, and how would it then compare.

So it still requires a mod to sound open. That's the biggest problem I have with stock 6xx.
Now I am looking forward to the slightly modded 660SM, just some dynamat/foam and reversible. If it's cleaner and faster, then it's worth it at more than double the 6xx price.

The construction of the driver doesn't seem to lend itself to mods. Also, from impressions, the driver / headphone doesn't sound as amenable to modding for fear of making things worse. Much like how the K or M mods on the HD600 would turn it into a disaster.

Then the HD660SM would be a proper name though there are probably some who would like it.

I hate overly complicated product names. They should have just called it the HD660.

In a fit of GAS I ordered one. Then I read a bit more deeply here and cancelled the order the next day. Crisis averted.

Today rode up to Schiit to pick up my Modi Multibit/Vali2 setup. Had a nice conversation at the shop, rode home, now listening to the Innervisions album. Also got a Meridian Explorer 2 to check out the MQA thing. Going A/B between the Schiity setup streaming HiFi and Meridian streaming MQA...I guess I'm just a bit of a Schiithead...

Explorer 2 also does not work with iPhone and CCK - draws too much power. Strike 2 :D

I highly agree. It seems that the most appropriate name would be "650S" (more consistent with the naming of 800S)

Supposedly, the name is derived from the headphone being a compromise between the 650 and 700, while retaining more of the 650's characteristics. Who knows if this is true, but I recall reading this someplace. Needless to say, still a weird name.

You guys can admit it, you want the HD660BDSM version...

(Not that there is anything wrong with that.)

I can confirm, music sounds better when I'm being choked.

The HD700 was already the HD660M, that's why this one is called the HD660S.

    (Get it?)

The S in 660S clearly stands for Satan and should just be dubbed the hd666 just in time for Halloween...

Head-Fi is full of people who loved Audioquest Nighthawk and so forth. Draw your own conclusions.

In case people haven't seen, here's a HF post with a pic of the front baffle and driver.

Comparing the last number printed on the diaphragm in this photo of an HD700 driver, it could be the same internals in a new housing.

BTW, how did you guys make the transition to this new thread? I was subbed to the old speculation one and had no clue it was moved here starting with Ray's post. (I'm also watching the Headphone forum, so should have been notified of a new thread. This has happened to me several times before.)
