My guess: Sennheiser likely believes 4.4mm is the next standard for all balanced headphones, which I think makes sense since it´s the only balanced connection that is suitable for mobile devices. One type for both mobile and desktop gear. Their new HDV820 has only one 4-pin XLR, yet two 4.4mm pentaconn outputs. The included 4.4mm cable is primarily meant for their own source, not other existing mobile gear. I would expect them to start selling a more mobile friendly shorter 4.4mm cable soonish though.

As for the impedance, it still probably swings into 300+ ohms in the bass range just like the HD 700 does, making it more or less a desktop headphone. Just this time it´s not completely hopeless with mobile gear. It´s still far from a typical ~16-50 ohm mobile oriented headphone.

A headphone called the Superlux HD660 already exists.

I wonder if part of the reason for bumping the impedance down is to make the 660s scale worse. The HD650 was presumably cannibalizing HD800 sales. Guys who buy 2k amps for a 300 dollar headphone obviously have the money for a 1.2k headphone but because of how well the 650 scaled, they didn't need too. Now more will, or maybe so Sennheiser hopes.

A lot people use a smartphone/DAP as their only source. It isn’t necessary to use a DAP while walking or on a bus.

But really I think they are aiming to make it sound good out of any output. Including laptops and the hp out on those cheap powered Logitech speakers. I would be curious to hear people comparing the hd650 and hd660 on these limited outputs.

I don't think they really intended portable use. The cables seem to suggest otherwise.

I'd vote we stop worrying about the impedance until we see a real impact on the sound beyond a couple clicks on the volume knob.

You have to admit, if these work well out of a good DAP, then that would be awesome for people with tiny work spaces...

Just waiting on @Dr. Higgs report

I sometimes use my HD650 for portable use out of my AK120II. Use them outside, doing some HW or something. But I'm not the dick who uses them in the library.

Wouldn't that depend on what you're planning to clamp?

Yes, depending on the girth. F=kx, f being force, k being spring constant, x being girth.

Everything of what you've guys read about the HD660S being awesome in this way or that way is utterly bullshit.

It's different, and not even that different. I'm with Ray. I'd take a HD650M, K, or even HD600 over this. There's a reason why Ray dumped them so quickly.

Here comes the wave of used HD660S' on eBay and HF being listed!

Jokes aside it is nice to see impressions that aren't praise, that solderdude review gave me the vibe that he really had to jump some hurdles in his mental gymnastics to call them an upgrade to the HD650 at all. That being said I still want to give the pads a go on my HD6XX(soon to be K), the current pads are already a bit worn and flattening, the supposed extra room for my ears is welcome and the one thing I really miss from the HD800S.

Only considering sonic characters and performances, what's your preference order? (among 600 650K 660s)

hey, I tried to cancel my order...

That said, I've never owned/heard any of the 6XX variants so perhaps worth a quick listen then return ride back to Senn. Or I'll just refuse the shipment and bask in my Sennheiser naiveté :-D Well, other than their mics, of which I use a few regularly.
