My new HD650 arrived yesterday. I tried to peel away what I assumed was a layer of glossy protective plastic atop the headphone band and then laughed as I realized it was the material itself. I see what others mean by cheap-looking materials.

I'm already enjoying the very different tone and soundstage presentation vs. my Alpha Dogs.

What do you use to feed your phones?
The DT880 600 is several tiers below old HD650 to my ears. Bright, veiled, soft echoing mess is how I remember these, esp vs HD650/ HD800.
But then a friend of mine liked these quite a bit. Go figure, taste matters in the end. Sweet, soft vocals is what I can see someone might have attraction to.

What? I ain't the only one pushing the HD650!

Listen stock for a while. Then do the mods. Get a really good tube amp for them.

The good news is DrFindley has a pair of Marv modded HD-650. In regards to a good tube amp I am kind of waiting for Marv to get some time to show me what the legends of Eddie Current are all about (hopefully a future meet).

No joke I heard the name Eddie Current being thrown around more than a few times at RMAF as well as on the head-fi boards. Just got to hear it for myself now :) .

Too bad I don't have any dynamat to finish that mod.

Toss me a message with an address and I'll stick some in a first class mail envelope. I'll make sure that you have enough for Velvetx's too if he decides he wants that part of the mod.

You sure as hell are not. It's been my favorite headphone out of everything I've demoed and owned so far. By far my favorite for just kicking back and enjoying music, tried the LCD 3F, naa, HD650 is where it's at. However I was not too big of a fan of the quarter mod... I think. The replacement foam (original from Sennheiser) should arrive soon so I can A/B it for a final decision.

    Now it's:
    Foobar2k --> Schiit Modi 2 Uber (Wasapi) --> Schiit Asgard 2 --> Headphone
    Waiting for my Bifrost MB

I guess different HD600/HD650/HD800s might sound slightly different as well as different DT880s might sound slightly different too.
There's always a slight variability within different units of a particular product.

Anyway, I'm pretty sure that different people, with different preferences, different body shape (head, ears,...), different age, different hearing, listening to different recordings at different levels through different gear might hear things quite different.

OK . I have to eat my words about the HD650.

Bought on a few weeks ago and didn't like it that much. Removed the damping material behind the driver but i wasn't more pleased. I struggled wit the overall Mushy Sound and a mids forwardnes that bothered me. Was ready to sell it but I suddenly remembered I need to try some new pads before to give up.

With new pads, the HD650 is definitely another beast. much more open & precise , less mushy and more balanced. Did the full mod and cut the holes in front of the driver today. as such, the HD650 is a hell of headphone. No doubt. Still a bit warm with probably a lack of ultimate cleanness of very best cans but overally extremely good. The highlight is definitely the overall consistency of the sound. All Frequencies seem to blend harmoniously in a whole enjoyable and musical sound. HD600 does that as well . But sense of space , layering , instrument positioning are all good and sounds are not messed up in a likewarm soup. I'm definitely surprised by the new bass extension I can hear and the sparkle in High mids. mods probably help for that.

So, this old timer stays at home. HD800 still rules but I'm amazed to see how old Senns can be close in SQ to the Current Senn Flagship.

Nothing new for most of you though.

I personally think the Valhalla 2 is a great pair with HD650's. Of course if you have a bigger budget there might be a better tube amp for them.

Try it and tell us how it goes. :) Or bring the A2 to the next CO meet and we'll find out. I'm curious myself.

    I haven't tried HD650 with Asgard 2, but I've been using HD600 with Asgard 2 for a few months.
Not bad at all, not the best match according to my preferences, but still nice.

The Asgard 2 is slightly warm, slightly relaxed and using HD600 I felt that it was too much of a good thing for me, especially coming from airier headphones
    (DT880, K702, T1, HD800)

The same might apply to HD650 (to a greater extent) but personal preferences still play a key role here.

The Asgard 2 is clear, open sounding and has plenty of power for the Senn HD650. If you can try the combo before buying, then that's your best bet.

I think my next headphones are gonna be the HD650. They were my first higher end headphones and I adored them for their midrange. My modified HE400's will probably get most of my listening time because they are extremely addicting and physical, but I feel like I'm still missing a sweetness to vocals that the 400's cannot provide. I've already got a Pioneer SX-990 receiver so hopefully they will pair well. Hope to have them by Christmas!

I think you'll love getting the HD650's again, they are an outstanding headphone and I think you'll soon realize what you've missed. You can also try some of the mods, it really brings out the clarity in the HD650's!
