I have only one thing to say as a HD800 owner:

Damn you Sennheiser for creating one of top 3 worse sounding and uncomfortable audiophile headphones.

Happy new year Madaboutaudio! The HD 700 are bashed here even more then "The Donald", so you hit a preaching sweet spot indeed! Personally, as a noob with peripheral interest in audio and headphones, I am sure to get some rotten tomatoes and eggs for having a different opinion. I had the HD 700 a while ago and did not think they were that bad. They are very well built despite everything plastic and more comfortable then HD 650 out of the box. They have a wide sound stage and especially with classical music sound great. Ended up returning them mostly because I was not blown way and thought they were too expensive (about 600USD at the time - again too much money for non audiophile zoombie).
With the caveat of treacherous memory, I think HD 700 were in a different league than my current Fidelio X2. The current prices make it not much more expensive, so all in all competitive. A polarizing headphone for sure, and I did not think of buying them again but probably not complete junk either. I am now happy with the old bother 650 and the Fidelio X2 - I got both on the cheap, about same or less than the original price I paid for the HD 700. Had I bought the HD 700 at the current prices, maybe would have kept them.

    EDIT: typos and weird syntax

    Here's the Number 1 spot

As for 2nd and 3rd place. It's a tie between HD700 and Grados(some of them)

These (HD700) aren't that bad. Sure the treble is sorta deadly with some music, but they are otherwise capable.
I wonder what happened to Tak and his quest on modding these. I quess he goinfg silent on this is he got lobotomy from the treble, lol.

What makes you say that and how long have you owned your HD700s?

I live very near a headphone store where I have access to all sorts of audiophile grade headphones for Long demo. Also I have listened to countless(hundreds) headphones through out twenty years of this hobby.

With most other headphones I would be able to listen for 15mins or more to evaluate the sound quality on different genres of music.
HD700 however, is one of the few handful of badly designed headphones where my ears are unable to bear listening to them for more than a minute or two due to its unbearable frequency response and uncomfortable clamping on my ears/head.

That's quite comprehensive then. On the other hand I must say I find them a better compromise than the HD650 and so they are my headphone of choice for my desk top system and I find them entirely comfortable to wear and delightful to listen to. I am not saying they are perfect but then neither is any other headphone I have heard and nor as my main system headphones which are currently HD800 although they are the best I have heard which I can also afford.

Truth! I have defended the HD700 for a while. Sure it's not neutral, and very colored, but it still a incredibly good headphone! Very capable and under appreciated.

I use mine all the time for gaming and a lot of metal.
