    I spoke with Sennheiser to try to confirm the 55k price tag - waiting on my contact's response. But the $55k price-tag is probably accurate. Not sure if they will sell the headphones as a stand-alone product or not, I will ask my contact that as well.

    Possibly, but I doubt it. If someone i spending $55k on those, I doubt they will buy a different amp - just my opinion. However if vendors feel they can sell them, then they probably will try.

    I think it's pretty unlikely. The connector is custom made so an appropriate jack will have to be made, for starters. Based on what I've read it sounds like the marble amp thing is basically a pre amp that takes the input signal and sends out a balanced 5V signal to the stators. It also provides the bias voltage and protection line. I don't think any amp manufacturer will waste their time making something that esoteric. If we're ever able to convince Sennheiser to sell us the headphones alone then maybe there will be a DIY amp like that or somebody will create a custom jack and bypass the active output stage in the cups with a Stax cable.

    Damn, looks like I was right after all OJ ;)

    Yup. Like I said before "I feel there is a purposed attempt by Sennheiser to make this thing incompatible with anything else".

    I'm not liking Sennheiser's pompous ass. A part of me wants the Orpheus 2 to sound really good. Another part of me wants it to suck real bad.

    It has amplifiers in the earcups (for what seem naively to be sensible reasons); is it possible to even really do that with a standard headphone plug? You need to run power up to them, right?

    If it has amplifier electronics in the earcups, the plugs/cables may not carry as much voltage (such as bias), but they may need to carry more power. In all cases, the cans need power and bias. Senn just chose to do things a certain way, allegedly 'cuz they are "passionate".

    n3rdling, you can always Kevin Gilmore to open up an Orpheus 2 and wire it directly.

    All in the name of avoiding that cable capacitance of course :Violin:
