Well, they heard that one should not build sandcastles in the air but nobody said anything about platters..

Not sure about the idea, but the price is good! Not much you can get for 1400$.

So any vibrations on the magnet do not get transferred to the platter? If not how can they keep the platter stable in the air?

Nevertheless it looks f'ing cool though.

Because what I really want sitting anywhere near my hyper-sensitive, low-output, magnetic pick-up is some honkingly-powerful modulated magnets.

Watch the video on Kickstarter. Someone gives the platter a little nudge and it continues to wobble forever! Oh my...

Exactly my thoughts. I can't imagine that will be very stable floating there. It may end up creating all sorts of noise and distortion issues. I thought one wanted something solid holding the record.

There is some kool factor to it though.

Seems as gimmicky as those overpriced floating bluetooth speakers... Just no.

I imagine that is what this is all about. Of course, they would pay some lip service to sound. I would think that would be just for the marketing.

If your non-audiophile friends and family were exposed to a turntable, I think most would not even notice/care much about sound quality. They couldn't miss the wow factor of a floating platter.

If the magnetic connection to the platter was strong enough to it in line... that'd be an interesting table. My Discmaster magnetically spins the platter, but it rests on the spindle.

My Spidey Sense / Force Clairvoyance sense tells me to STAY AWAY. The marketing tactic seems a bit too LHLabs of yore for me. Kickstarter stuff tends to trigger PTSD with me.

Using magnets to float the platter by varying extents was / is being done by various big name vendors such as VPI, EAR, clearaudio. Ultimately, it all comes down to implementation. Some of the concerns you guys raised are legit: magnetic force affecting the cartridge, need to secure on the Z-axis, etc.

P.S. What Hollywood vfx company did they hire to make that video?

Yeah, I forgot to mention this has all the marks of a kickstarter gimmick that in the end you'll be disappointed with. I have a shelf full of these things, anyone want one?

This isn't being made by people I trust to do it well, this is made by people who want to see a floating platter.

I find it's best with all Kickstarter projects to see and hear and try the final product or have reviewers try it out. Only good Kickstarter I've backed was this Peak Design camera bag, which is basically a LHLabs tactic that somehow went right.

At least it will bring new and spectacular failure modes when it (inevitably) carks it.

I theory, I love the idea. Just like I love the idea of playing a record with lasers rather than a stylus.

In practice, I think... magnetism? But the damn cartridge works by magnets: why would I want to put the whole thing in a magnetic field? ANd, I'm told that the very amazing very expensive laser turntables are not that wonderful to listen to.

Vinyl: Sure I love it. Grew up with it. Started with Shellac. And sure it can still be a wonderful source, and some good decks are not going to be exactly cheap, let alone the methods of keeping perfectly ordinary vibrations like people walking away from them --- let alone the planet breathing, etc etc etc. The whole field is just ripe for an explosion of lunatics.

    This idea? I'll pass.
