I received this M6 Pro 21 (ESS version) loaner from a Friend. I am comparing it to my older M6 Pro AKM version using Final D8000 Pro (out of SE) and Focal Clear OG w/ Dekoni elite hybrid pads (using bal. out). Settings are dual dac, linear phase, high (i.e. "turbo") gain.

    Pros:

    • It is clean, clear, and what it resolves it does so well.
    • Surprisingly it goes some way in solving the sibilance problem of the D8000, even more than my main rig Yggdrasil>Starlett chain.
    • midrange is cool, clean, and clear...did I mention that?
    • no serious treble ESS "etch" that I could detect.
    Cons:

    • Bass is lean, very lean, sort of "who stole my subwoofer?!" lean. While the AKM version has a bit of "velvet" in bass, it is overall much more realistic IMO.
    • Mids are too cool for my preferences and probably many others here.
    • While both of these are DAP's, the AKM version actually does do a bit of stage and the subsequent separation/placement. The ESS version is straight line between the ears flat.
    • The ESS is a couple of steps behind the AKM version when it comes to detail and nuance. Reverb trails and the inner nuance of voices/instruments goes missing with the ESS version, and the music looses much of its dimensionality.

The last point is what really separates them for me. With the AKM version I am stepping down from the main rig, but the sound is compelling, detailed, and nuanced, whereas with the ESS version I am definitely aware I am listening to a clean and clear but boring chip amp powering two speakers on the sides of my head.

My recommendation is that you purchase the AKM version new or used and skip the M6 Pro "21".
