I haven't heard the NOS sound myself and I don't recall reading that before, so I'm curious what it is you don't like about NOS?

Is it the upper register rolloff I've read about, some tonal fuckery, or something else?

Soundstage flatness is the most notable downside of NOS. I love NOS but since I've discovered ambient music I left it behind. Ambient is completely dependent on layering, NOS is wall-of-sound. NOS has problems with all genres of electronic music honestly where none of its positives carry through.

On the topic at hand, an important consideration is the effectiveness of a company's marketing. ZMF is the perfect example of a company who aren't afraid to speak on their 'house sound' and philosophy. They effectively filter out people such as myself who don't generally like that kind of sound. A lot of companies take pride in the fact they don't talk about their products' sound and all that does is ensure they're going to have unhappy customers who bought their stuff on a gamble or got caught up in a hype train.

They’re very creative players with insane senses of rhythm and dynamics. Even those cheeseball, post Dio, 80s Sabbath records are half great and AC/DC always have that one big track on their later stuff.
