Shouldn't the DT990 be technically superior over the DT880?

    Superior in what sense? Listening experience in your average living room, or basement without acoustic treatment, or desk setup? I think you are right that decent speakers would give you more natural in a sense better experience than let's say HD800S, but your price tag is way too low. The fact that good headphones remove the room acoustic from the equation cannot be so easily dismissed.

    With headphones you can hear more detail in the recording, while with speakers you can feel the sound with your body and the music sounds more natural.

    It's not that the bass hits lower octaves, or treble can shine without being sibilant, it's that the sound hits your whole body. It makes a huge difference.
