Those are 2 x 15"2 x 12" drivers. You would need a 22"17" driver to get more surface area

i just looked it up. They’re similar to Altec 414 woofers, so two 12”s. The cabinet just makes them look tiny.

You are right. He has another version that's 2 x 15". correcting my post

I've seen a few pro speakers with this woofer arrangement so I imagine there's a good reason for it. comb filtering wouldn't be an issue at their lower frequency

Yeah, That compression driver is waaaay behind the woofers. I'm curious how the original Altecs looked like now.

Could be offset by a wavelength at crossover frequency

Weirdly enough I've just stumbled across this guy's Instagram account here: https://www.instagram.com/devonojas/

I have no idea what he's up to or who he is but I have to say that he seems to make some very good looking amps - anyone with any experience of his products?

If you check Steve Guttenberg's youtube channel, he did a couple videos about this guy a month back.

    me too!

In the Guttenberg interview he said the 12" version was well regarded in japanese audiophile circles but he couldn't really use that driver for a smaller speaker. So he checked if there was an 8" version and it worked out. I wonder if the 12" one sounds good open baffle?

That coax driver is not cheap either at $300 but it does include woofer, compression driver and the crossover.

The video makes him seem pretty interesting & the DIY kit seems fun but its no longer for sale. Bottom line is he went to Asia, fell hard for the 1930's vintage horn gear craze and is importing it back here. I'm a bit put off by a $12,000 price tag on his unfinished plywood, 1930s rip-off 'limited edition' speaker though:

Maybe the cost is in that 'Studio 947' cable lying on the floor.

The manufacture date on this says 2013 ? how long has this guy been around?

I've been to Devon's place in Brooklyn and heard a couple of his speakers. As pictured above, he does variations on VOTT and Japanese-inspired horns with larger woofers and, often, vintage super tweeters. Custom seemed to be the rule rather than exception. Some of the speakers in house have built-in subs also.

He seems like a nice and interesting (and busy) guy. Seems like he still very much has a foot in the fashion world, though it's also clear he's a total audio nut. Interesting analog stuff all over the place, too. Think Garrard TTs, vintage Ortofon and Dynavector tonearms, and SPUs of many vintages. For a certain segment of the audio world--one I enjoy but don't know a ton about--this is all pretty awesome.

Pricing does seem high. I guess you could get this stuff DIYed or built by a small maker for quite a bit cheaper. My suspicion is that Devon's market is restaurants and clubs and museums and folks who've got a bit of cash and just want something cool.

As for what I heard at Devon's, I was definitely intrigued. The systems were, on the whole, tuned a little darker than what I'm accustomed to. The bass response and quality impressed. Pretty good on upright bass, which is where a lot of folks into this aesthetic will be focused.

I don't know what it all adds up to--I'm hanging on to my Magnepan set-up for now--but it's pretty interesting to see, potentially, a new part of the audio world, which can be otherwise pretty boring, staid, and, well, uncool.

To charge $3000 a spool you call it "Studio 947" and make sure its "right-handed."

But yeah, Belden 9497, used by the Japanese horn speaker set. Its not bad.

Japanese-horn world is still pretty new to me, so don't really know what to listen for when encountering. Seems like "darker," "warmer," "organic" is the goal?

SPU world is interesting, too. I've got an SPU #1E and Synergy G, and I like them both, but they're definitely the anti-thesis of the dial in the cart set-up to a fraction of a micrometer approach (which I've had some success with, also). "Close enough for SPUs" is how one dealer put it to me.

Btw, one nice thing about the OJAS or OMA model is that it's just... refreshing in a world of hi-fi dealers with windowless, acoustically dead showrooms with the latest Wilson speakers and blinged-out monster amps from pick your brand. I've heard good sound from that sort of stuff, to be sure, but there's nothing particularly hip or personal about any of it.

    I'm guessing that's that 31" Fostex woofer?

I'm sure it is. I know he's aware of it since he has reposted some japanese systems with the driver

Speaking of which, I've noticed that old JBL and Fostex monitors with dual horizontal woofers are common in Japanese audiophile spaces. What is it about horizontal woofers? Does it improve imaging or dispersion?
