Anyone saw this yet? Trying to figure out if I should pay CBS or not.

Saw it. Fits more with modern Abrams Star Treks, both in look and in action packed episodes. Also, after two episodes, they pretty much restarted storyline, nobody knows, how will rest of series looks like. Honestly, I wouldn't pay CBS for it.

I've only seen the first epi, but given the current dearth of quality sci-fi shows, I'd pay CBS for it. It's enough fun with sufficiently little plot and character facepalming to be worth it. It's on the level of Dark Matter seasons 1 & 3, below the level of The Expanse and the Battlestar reboot.

Yep, The Orville feels like a successor to TNG with dick jokes. Discovery doesn’t look or feel like Trek at all. Do not pay for CBS All Access, I hope that service crashes and burns.

I'm waiting for the season to be over before I decide if I give them money for a month to binge it.

The first episode was kinda terrible, to be honest. I made it to the third commercial break before I threw up my hands and didn't bother watching the rest of the commercials (not a typo. When I got 8 minutes of commercials followed by 4 minutes of episode, I got pissed and changed the channel to a rerun of some other show).

Later in the week, I decided to try The Orville despite not being a Seth MacFarlane fan and find it to be just what the doctor ordered. It is Star Trek by a different name. It doesn't take itself too seriously, but it's not the fart joke fest with empty plot I was worrying it would be. Only four episodes in so far, and it has addressed some pretty real issues while entertaining quite well.

So Seth MacFarlene has managed to best Trek. Or should I say the CBS execs idea of Trek. Should have been called Star Trek:The Discovery of Profit. Not all that surprised .

First two episodes of Discovery were underwhelming, but I just watched the third and it's showing some promise. Less cheese, a bit of gore, some better acting. Reckon I'll stick with it for a while. Watching on Netflix tbough, adverts do my head in.

It's an insult to everything Star Trek.

Imagine the character & plot stupidity of Star Trek: Insurrection mixed with the vapid meaningless action set pieces of the JJ Abrams films.

Sigh. I'd like to give it a shot, but sorry, CBS, I'm not signing up for your streaming service in order to do so. I'd be happy to PAY for the season via iTunes or Amazon, or watch on Netflix like the rest of the world, but nope, no more streaming subscriptions, ain't gonna happen, no way, no how, sorry, done. Got it, CBS?

I haven't had the opportunity to see Discovery (and paying CBS is not happening), so can't comment, but Orville feels like a direct successor to the TNG/DS9-era of Trek.

If you're at all a fan of the 90's series, check-out Orville.

Agreed, episode 3 shows promise. More trek and i think there might even be less lens flares.

The Klingons look weird to me though, why did they need changing? Too much JJ/alternate time line influences imo, don't get me wrong i enjoyed those movies but this is supposed to be prime timeline right?

Also they speak too slow, i guess being a Klingon has an increased risk of brain damage.

Signed up for one week trial. (BTW, fragmentation of delivery channels is going to make people STEAL the content instead of buy it.)

T'Kuvma: Now was he talking about keeping the Klingons pure from Tellerites, Andorians, Vulcans -or- Mexicans, Asians, and Arabs. Hard to tell with Hollywood these days.

Burnham: OK. I can buy the cutting-edge boy's name, but why is she so obnoxious and impulsive? Makes zero sense that she embodies the worst of Vulcan and Human behavior. She would have been dead 23 times over during her seven year tour with Captain Crouching Tiger.

    Hope it gets better.

Of the new Star Trekish shows, the best episode I've seen so far has been Orville Episode 4. The new Star Trek seemed to fall flat for me. I think it may be I prefer my star trek in self contained episodes. Discovery just seems to have so little story in each episode.

Going to wait until the first season is done, sign up for the CBS trial and binge it. Can't resist Star trek as much as I'd like to pretend I'm not a huge f'ing nerd.

I’m going to do the same thing. This is a great idea.

Always been a Trekkie, always will be. Even if it sucks, I’ll still need to watch it.

I mean c’mon, look at my username...

Glad to report E03 is very solid. Some real sci-fi, alien monsters, experiments gone wrong, fate of redshirts, a twist on Starfleet Captains, and no overt commentary on the state of USA politics (unless I am too dumb to notice).

This show is starting to pick up, again proper trek in the latest episode. Still not a big fan of the way the Klingons look but there is some actual depth to them.
The way Landry was killed off was a bit contrived though, maybe she forgot the resurrection ships were useless now...
