Season 2 episode 2 returns to Star Trek themes, not explosions, and more explosions and shit crashing into shit, and more explosions. Wasn't this recent episode directed by Cmdr. Riker? He's got a good touch with personal interactions, like an Ang Lee lite. Parts of it almost made me think I was watching TNG. A little scene gives us insight into Pike's character that foreshadows his eventual fate in TOS.

I remain guarded since Orci of the Abrams / Kurtzman / Orci school of writing and directing is at the helm. He might be OK. Maybe he will find his niche as a great executive producer despite sucking balls as a writer and director.

Season 2 Episode 1 was dumb. They didn't need to waste all money on effects and explosions. Absolutely no point to those action scenes.

That was a downer after a great middle to middle-end. The ending was lazy, too convenient, cliche, and preachy to say "we are Starfleet, we don't do that shit" in 2018, even for Star Trek. If people are going to senselessly murder you and have already murdered 1/3 of your family, you murder them back, all of them, or enough of them so they don't dare come back. Twinky writers were probably trying to make a point that the US should have never dropped nukes on Japan.

As for the first season, the first two episodes, I got the sense that same twinky writers were on some slant, a commentary on the politics of the USA (Klingons need to be pure, we are being polluted by weirdo races from the Federation, keep them out, etc.)

Then someone from upstairs noticed and said WTF is this shit? People want to watch shows to be entertained, not be reminded of this shit. Or if it's going to be about social issues, better do it in a really smart way. Wasn't the original creator of Discovery, the guy who named a girl Michael shoved out after the first two episodes were written? We will never know.

Anyone seen the latest episode? Terminator Skynet? I'm going to say bad things about executive producer Roberto Orci (Transformers) if it really goes down this path.

Gay guy relationship issues with Stamets and Culber seems forced. They need someone like Ang Lee to handle this stuff.

Tilly should not be allowed on the bridge. This is a professional environment. I guess she is supposed to be comedic relief but it's not working.

Michael and Spock's interactions as brother and sister are great. Reminds me of my kids when they insult each and on occasion drop the truth bombs.

Cool reimagining of the Talosians the week before.

This season is much better than the first but I have the same issues with this season as you do.

I hate the whole "control" angle because I dont think they will do the right thing with it. But even the right thing has been done before - see Cylons and BSG. Nope, Discovery will go the lazy Thanos route - kill everyone because it will save the universe.

Side bar - what would be cool is that since the red angel first appeared to Spock the whole AI vs living things angle is just some sort of physical manifestation of Spocks internal humanity vs logic struggle and how it somehow infected control. I dont know why the red angel would have to save people from WWIII in that scenario though.

The Stamets/Culber thing is a drag to watch but mainly because Stamets seems neutered this season. Season 1 Stamets would be more interesting here.

Tilly is a main character and the show should develop another character for comic relief. I dont mind her being funny sometimes but that's her only thing now. They are wasting Mary Wiseman.

I didn't think I would like Spock and Burnam as much as I do.

I just realized who Stamets in Star Trek Discovery is clearly named after. Forehead slapping moment.

How do you feel about the Control/Red Angel plot? It's kind of growing on me for some reason.

I'm kind of hoping that Control turns out to somehow be a Borg tie-in.

Last two episodes have taken a turn for the worse. Mom and T1000. No thanks. Figured Roberto Orci would suck sooner or later.

The Red Angel was a perfect opportunity to tie Patrick Stewart in with the new series he's doing.

This line in episode 8 just killed me, I had to pause and turn on CC to make sure I heard right:

I was hopeful this season would be better but it's worse. Maybe the two spinoffs will be better but i'm past the point of caring for this shitshow.

The Alternative Factor TOS *was* THE worst trek EVER ep for me until, one episode early in season 2 STD (don't have the energy to see which one)

I like the two Jonathan Frakes episodes... he really tried to get some of the actors to blow it out their ass and actually act (Michael/Spock chess scene (one example)) -- bet it took 30 takes and them sweating -- but they are settling back, Michael Burnham acting is just so bad.

Special effects are cool (and amazing sound), but it's like it's just the current trend, or assets, I don't know, does not feel like trek. The bridge looks like an ASUS/ACER gaming laptop with cranked rgb lighting and 10minute battery life.

If they go Borg it's unfortunate, a crutch and too easy, they'll f it up.

Loved the Talosians and the plant sound effects tho, even with the crazy story :)

Wow...this week's episode was a total disaster, part of me hopes they don't do a season 3, so much of season 1 was so good, and they're just ruining it :/

HAHAHA. I missed that. If Starfleet had just used appropriate input sanitization on their web site they wouldn't have had that problem. n00bs.

I expect Doctor Who and a reprogrammed T800 older-model Terminator to come calling soon. Yeah, let's just make up random shit as we go along. The season started well with Star Trek stories. Now I have no idea what it is.

I want a season 3. Destroy the Discovery. Let's see two years of Anson Mount as Captain Pike and Rebecca Romjin as #1 on the Enterprise pre-Kirk. Recycle old scripts from TOS or TNG. And get rid of Roberto Orci.

I like the relationship between Spock and Michael and with their respective mothers-- and Ethan Peck's "catty Spock" who's also kind of recovering from that and becoming the Spock we know. It just...kind of rings true to me. I also like how Michael is slowly becoming a more warm person.

I also enjoy Ash and L'Rell's weird love-hate relationship (it feels like a very real portrayal of two exes who have a kid together and are worried about him and have a lot of mixed feelings about everything, or maybe that just reveals my naivete lol). Seeing the Klingon monastery with the kooky krystal room was also kind of cool and I like anything that fleshes their culture out a little more beyond "we're all somehow warriors even though that makes absolutely no sense." It also somehow feels like Discovery is tying in to DS9's "Trials and Tribblations," and by extension "the Trouble with Tribbles," with Klingons having another temporal artifact and even with Ash being a surgically altered Klingon like Arne Darvin was. And the little resolution between Ash and L'Rell at the end seemed to speak a lot with only a little bit of screen time.

Finally, I still really like this version of Captain Pike. I thought he had some good character moments in this last episode, especially. I'm glad that the next episode might see him interact with Rebecca Romijn's No. 1 again.

Control is quite a stock villain, I admit. Though I'm still holding out hope that it's going to turn out to be the origin of the Borg (temporal shenanigans or the crew thinking that they destroyed it when they really didn't or even Control falling into a wormhole only to wind up in the Delta Quadrant is all that would be needed to avoid violating continuity with "Q Who?"... then we'd just all need to pretend that the Enterprise episode "Regeneration" never happened, which is fine by me lol). Tying the Borg into time travel, a super-advanced alien, AND the very "un-Roddenberry" Section 31 (which also debuted in DS9, might I add) would be fun and feel somehow appropriate.

I admit that the dialog can be clunky at times and it suffers from the "take us absolutely seriously dammit!" disease that seems to afflict all network drama these days. But other than those flaws, I guess I'm just a mark.

I hadn’t watched Season 2 of Discovery, but decided to binge watch it before S3 started.

I have to say, I liked it. I liked it better than S1 in many ways. The only things that really bothered me was the too predictable evil AI/Terminator thing, and the apparent widespread awareness of the existence of Section 31 (I thought they were super secret and basically unheard of 20 years later in DS9??). Other than those high level plot issues, the episodes each had good pacing, tension and acting IMO, and I liked the Red Angel storyline. Spock and Pike were very cool too. Also the special effects and visuals were quite excellent.

The major thing that turned me off in Season 1 was the Mirror Universe twist. That just pissed me off. Other than the first Original Series episode of Mirror, Mirror (love that Spock goatee) I can’t stand the mirror universe episodes, I think they’re just bad.

The Season 3 opener was ok. I didn’t like the new environmental justice warrior bad boy boyfriend parts, but otherwise, not bad. Not great though. Looking forward to the rest of the season picking up steam.

Not sure this is ST anymore. Seems more like Star Wars. Just waiting for the cat to talk or have force powers.

Funny because I almost wrote that the season opener had a major Star Wars vibe to me. Picard has a few episodes like that as well.

Also thought the mirror universe was tiring. I liked season 2 and the dynamics around Michael and Spock. Very much in the direction of the new movies, but pretty fun.

The Short Treks were cool, had a touch of Black Mirror.

Hated Picard, felt like a random sci-fi action thriller.

At least her constant crying fits with how most trekkies feel about this dogshit. I mean isn't she raised by Vulcans who mostly control their emotions?

Picard wasn't much better either, they have absolutely no clue where to go with this franchise.

It's like they told someone the general idea about startrek and they just ran with it without ever watching the source material. Blowing most of the budget on special effects(and coke).
