Having grown up on the Original series in the 60’s I just have a hard time with these new ST. It doesn’t feel like Star Trek. I guess the 1960’s vibe is missing. Or the writers aren’t as good. The acting is excellent. But the writing isn’t up to snuff.

I also grew up on TOS and have watched every ST series (with the exception of the animated series or Lower Decks so far). I agree it doesn't feel like ST and I think it's because this series and Picard seem much more action oriented (and ugh that ending in Picard). Thinking back to TOS, it was very much about ideas and issues played out in a scifi setting. They were also about a seemingly utopian society and Discovery and Picard have clearly upended this, perhaps with the intent to appeal to a larger audience(?). With Discovery and Picard, you may as well have Michael Bay direct these and I do watch some Michael Bay productions, but again, they aren't as idea driven as I think of ST.

There have certainly been some big periods of drought for Star Trek fans, but I'll admit to being a big enough fan boy that I'll watch all of them anyway because for me, some (flawed) star trek is still better than no star trek.

Yeah I’ll pretty much watch any Trek, but Picard almost made me break that rule. It was bad, bad. A dumpster fire wrapped up in a train wreck.

Star Trek is doing the serialized thing rather than the episodic thing right now. And I’m ok with that. There’s room for both types of Trek in my opinion. DS9 kind of started episodic, but had some common things running through it until the Dominion War and then it sort of became serialized. And DS9 kicked ass in those last few seasons. But I agree, the writing needs to be there, and for Picard it definitely was not. Discovery I consider leaps and bounds better than Picard in virtually every way.

Trek has been notorious for starting off poorly. Every first 1-2 seasons of a new Trek franchise is generally not great. TNG, DS9, Voyager, Enterprise, all the same. It usually takes a couple of seasons to get their shit together, so I’m willing to give them the benefit of the doubt. For Picard, I think they should pretty much just reboot it and forget everything that happened in the first season and go on to something completely different.

Yeah, I think DS9 is often very underrated by people who just watch the first couple seasons when they were just stuck on the station, but I agree that once they went serialized and had the Dominion War, that was some great Star Trek too. Some episodic ST shows also were annoying with the reset-to-zero where all the catastrophic damage incurred was all magically restored by the next episode.

Ok, in last week's episode, was it just me or did anyone when they saw this

    think about this

    and when you saw this
    [IMG]

    you thought this

And then I thought I was going to be really annoyed if an alien said this
    [IMG]

or this if they didn't speak German

But, then, I actually thought it would be TOTALLY AWESOME if they did an entire riff on Die Hard.

But that was definitely hoping for too much from Discovery. At the end instead, we had what looks like will be the Deux Ex Machinas:

But I will admit that I did like this character because she wasn't so black and white baddie, but actually had an interesting proposal to revamp the Federation and legitimize her faction. Of course, she just expected the admiral could read it on the spot for approval (just like the House had to approve the bill for the latest round of stimulus checks, so I guess it happens).

I liked the character even if she reminded me of this character (come on, you know you were thinking it too)

They should sell out. Give Riker a ship, put Picard in the grandpa chair, bring Kunte Kinte and Worf back.

It's not great. But it's also not bad. CBS has my subs, until SNW ends.
