I'm enjoying it the more I watch. It certainly has a different feel and cadence to the story-telling. No "monster of the week". Character development is pretty rich, and done well. It seems less focused on world-building and assumes the audience has a cursory knowledge of the show.

I'm struggling with this "spore" drive BS. It seems like a convenient hyper-science fiction to move the plot along. Star Trek has never been shy about some far-fetching ideas, but this seems like a stretch. Universe-wide instantaneous FTL travel...WTF?

Character development is one of the stronger points. My daughter and wife are actually interested in the show because of this. Makes me happy because it gets the teenager out of her room, away from her phone, and into the family room. The sci-fi element is a bit of a stretch. The PETS (people for the ethical treatment of space creatures) stuff seems borrowed from Doctor Who. Hopefully the sci-fi schtick won't become a crutch, but the Gary Mitchell like foreboding in the last episode is spooky.

First two pilot episodes bad. The rest have been good. Definitely Star Trek, but a slightly different take with bad words when shit happens. And finally the special effects that Star Trek has always deserved.

Holy shitsnacks. Episode 5 was clearly an attempt to bring Star Trek into the Game of Thrones age of TV...

    - Klingon stomping on a redshirt's head, complete with blood spurt? CHECK.

    - Dropping the F bomb not once but twice in the same exchange, just in case you missed it the first time? CHECK.

    - Two star fleet officers in a gay toothbrushing scene? CHECK. (no kissing yet though).

Lack of activity here seems to reflect my lack of interest in episode 6.
Can't they think of any other plot lines than "capture/escape from Klingons"?

The "fuck" threw me in for a loop since it's ST. I think they wanted to do this one for an action oriented episode with Klingons. The next episode recovers and is quite good.

    Agreed.

The F bomb was a nice touch. Let's be real, "I just can't do it Capt." in a crisis scenario would have really been "Are you fucking kidding me! You want more fucking power?!? I'm getting too old for this shit...".

Guess people have stopped watching, or aren't interested enough to comment.

Just catching up with the post holiday episodes. Lots more swearing in the Evil Universe. Huge plot hole at the end of ep. 10. Seems to be getting more and more lame.

Kind of liked this, but had to ffwd the last three(?) parallel universe eps. I just can't stand PU stuff. I can suspend my disbelief on pretty much anything, but always stumbling to the one PU where everyone is there, alive and anti-versions of themselves is just insulting.

Its long established Star Trek canon man. So you are either a Trekkie or you are not.

I find believing that you could be in the same room as a real light saber without it melting your face or that Vin Diesel can jump cars between buildings far more insulting.

If you can handle the TOS episode with Lazarus, and figure out which Lazarus is which in some scenes, then PU is no problem. It is canon. One of the best of TOS episodes is the Empire universe. A classic. It’s been used in every series I think.

Guess I should get caught up on Discovery, since I got sucked into CBS’s cash grab when Dish cut them off.

The reveal, and the other reveal, were good, despite all the hints.

I didnt even know this thread was here, but I agree with marv completely, the first two episodes of Discovery were shit, and at the time i was sort of enjoying the seth mcfarlane show. But after that, Discovery got really really good, and the seth mcfarlane thing went down the shitter.

Im still really enjoying Discovery though, they brought Star Trek into the modern day without losing Star Trek in the process

I wasn't too pleased with the mirror-mirror thing initially - it does seem like an cheap device. But the show has come through again.

They get back home - spoiling nothing here. But the Asian tiger mom "let me show you politically correct Federation types how to deal with this shit" in the preview for next week's episode is simply awesome.

I know and I couldn't care less if I'm trekkie or not. I've seen all series, just binged DS9, some great stuff there.. occasional PU here and there is fine (ffwd ftw), but dedicating three eps for it, not my thing. I stopped caring about everyone (the little I cared..).

Parallel universes, alternate timelines...classic trek. Some of the best episodes I recall come from alternate timelines, "Year of Hell" on Voyager was especially good.

Yes, it’s different. This is Trek with balls. Digging it.

Agreed. Voyager itself was a bit darker than others, but this episode was especially somber.

I see Discovery having a similar tone.

No one’s having fun. This actually seems more plausible.

So similar to the first season(I didn’t like the first two episodes much), I didn’t like the first episode much, but already, I thought episode two was much better, I’m now firmly looking forward to the rest.

Anyone else pick this back up? I also wasn’t in love with the last episode of the first season, but all that stuff in the middle was pretty great

It started off as a show that I didn't want to like, because screw CBS and their cash grab subscription thing, but it was a really good show. I agree there first two episodes were meh. The ending had me thinking WTF, but... Ok.

Haven't seen any of season 2. I'll get around to it eventually.
