Just discovered there is a Despecialised Edition of the Original Trilogy. All the glorious storytelling pre-1997's butchered "Special" Edition of the movies, available for free download (if you have the special edition, that is).

What do you guys think about this? How does the law work on a local scale, and on an international one?

I'm surprised Disney hasn't assassinated this guy. I had heard that Disney may release the original versions. It all comes down to money. His work could cut into the Disney bottom line.

One of those instances where "right" and "legal" do not occupy the same circles in the Euler diagram.

I would love to have the original movies in high quality. But yes, I don't think what this dude did is legal.

All I can say is I've seen A New Hope Despecialized, and it was great.

There's too many versions and if anyone tells me the version I've seen was wrong, or the order I saw them in was wrong again, I'm going to tell them to f**k off in the most polite manner because frankly I don't have time to dissect and argue over every one. I also find it odd that the people who make fun out of me growing up for liking Star Wars are now "avid fans."

Regardless of how good this movie is or isn't it reeks of a lot of smells I don't want to smell at this point. It's a scenario of Phish and other jam bands.

I wouldn't say there's a wrong way to view the movies, but the Machete Order puts forward a strong case for going: IV, II, III, V, VI
    http://www.nomachetejuggling.com/2011/11/11/the-star-wars-saga-suggested-viewing-order/
It looks like a good choice for newcomers who want to get up to (light)speed.

People who know what I currently do for a living know that I am intimately familiar with stuff regarding the legalities of "content" as it is called in the industry. The way the law works is money and influence, and lots of it to congressmen, the President, foreign dignitaries, etc. I shall say no more. Whenever there is a lot of money involved, one lobbies for laws to protect the golden geese. These are purely my own views. Congressmen didn't come up with DMCA on their own. It could have been far worse had Google not gone to bat on behalf on netizens.

On the international question: some countries do not respond to DMCA take down notices. So if the servers are hosted there, nothing much legal can be done. But there are other methods.

I'll second Hands' opinion on this version. I've watched releases of the original trilogy on tape, dvd, and blu ray over and over, and this version really makes you understand why people were so enthralled by the original cinematic release.

Okay for general Star Wars chat here?

Was just reminded by friends we have tickets for Force Awakens opening tomorrow at midnight.

I'm not sure where my expectations should be on this one. I'm keeping an open mind but expecting queues of people dressed as storm troopers.

I refuse to watch the JJ bullshit on principle, he absolutely butchered Star Trek and I highly doubt SW will be any better. That and I read the leaked script and was seriously disappointed.

All the additions were terrible. Vader having to call the Star Destroyer in Empire to pick him up a thirteen year old mall rat was hilarious. The new Jabba and Ewok songs were really bad. Also they fucked up the color timing.

"GOD" sold his work to Disney. Disney now decides for you. Hope for the best...

I'll third that opinion. The despecialized editions look so good. Incredible what Harmy has been able to pull off. The RoTJ version has some rough edges being a 1.0, but Star Wars and Empire despecialized look pretty perfect.

I have low expectations of the new JJ Star Wars. With every trailer, the less interest I have in it. It already feels like Transformers with so many characters. So obvious Disney is thinking $$$ from toys, and that pre-ruins the experience.

I remember seeing Star Wars in 1977 with no idea what it was about before going in the theater. What a great opening scene. Too bad Lucas went senile.

P.S. Looking forward to Justin Lin's take on Star Trek though, knowing that it's not Star Trek.

Low expectations here too, but definitively hoping the film will exceed them with some margin.

There are two factors here. One George Lucas kept experimenting with his product formulas like MJ high on "Thriller" and Disney is even better at exploiting the masses than George Lucas ever was.

P.S. I meant every word in this post. After "Bad" I cannot stand the MJ albums and I consider Disney partially evil.
