Sounds like a good choice, the Jot should give you some authority on the low end. You may want to KISS mod the HD650.

Vacuumtubes.net looks like they have some available: http://vacuumtubes.net/RES Audio pages/2c51.html
Dale is a good guy and stands behind his tubes. He also has some NOS Northern Electric, which was WE's Canadian branch.

I actually have a few bought from Dale but I don't think I have the means to match them - they were intended for MHDT DACs.

If you're looking at 396A/2C51/5670 tubes, I've also liked Raytheon, and if you search "396" on Brent Jessee ( http://www.audiotubes.com/audtube.htm ), he gives good descriptions of other brands. WE is getting scarce, and scarce means that prices are usually much more than performance is worth.

Given my music choices - mostly older stuff, large country collection form the 70s and 80s, same with old classic rock (Eagles, Eric Clapton, Pink Floyd, Rush, etc) and some Marcus Miller type jazz. Plus my current amp/DAC choices - toslink from Mac Pro to old Yamaha RX-Z1 or Schiit Jotunheim with the balanced DAC paired with Sennheiser HD 600 and HD 650 headphones.

Can I get some recommendations for “better”/newer headphones to audition? I am not adverse to spending more money and I have been eyeing the HD 800S headphones, but thinking it might be a good time to step out and try something besides Sennheiser…. I am still listening to the HD 660S (but I think they are going back just for the fact that I have the HD 600 and 650).

I see the LCD 2 Classic mentioned a lot in some of the threads I have been reading (and there is a ton of great information I have been reading through this week!).

I'd hold off chasing other headphones till you see if you like your existing HD600 & HD650 on the Jotunheim. You very well might be happy right where you are.

I would suggest a new cable for your headphones (both use the same so you only need one), that takes advantage of the amp's full power out of the 4 pin XLR out...

So, I did order a set of XLR balanced cables from Periapt for the HD 650's. Hopefully those are ok, if not can you recommend a good replacement cable source?

I'm not going to proclaim cable make no difference, but cables really aren't worth the effort until one is running elite gear. Jots and vintage integrated amps aren't elite.

Yeah yeah, blah blah, opinions vary. But I say if your new cable feels solid and functions properly, then stick with it...

Agree, I really wasn't looking for performance out of the headphone cables, just a way to utilize the 4 pin XLR out on the Jot with the HD 650s, and that company came up on a Google search! I assumed $65 was about as good a deal as I was going to find...

Is this just for audio gear? Lord knows I could use all kinds of other advice.

Ok, question on settings for the Jot on a Mac. My assumption is select highest format for the Midi settings?

On Jot's product page, the maximum input capability for both the dual and the multibit DACs is stated to be 24/192, so I'd go with that.

    please help

    I have Schiit Ragnarok Amp
Pioneer u05s headphone Amp / DAC
    Denon D2000

The pioneer has 0.3 W in balanced output for headphone
I do not understand a thing, the power of my Schiit has more power than Pioneer, but at the same volume perceived by the ears, the volume knobs are also on the same level.
Ragnarok is setting in High Gain
Pioneer and the schiit are connected through a rca cable.

    I don't understand

    Thank you
    regards

I'm not sure what the problem is based on what you just said. Is there something wrong with the volume? Something with the headphone?

What knob position are you comparing? At max position on both, the Ragnarok is expected to output higher level, but at lower positions volume controls can be very non-linear and can't be used to compare between two different amplifiers.

Comparing between 9 am and 10 am

The dac and the rags are connected via a rca, it is possible that the signal is attenuated due to the low voltage of the unbalanced connection.
If I connected them via a balanced connection I would have to solve the problem.
    quite right?
    thanks

It is probably better (no first-hand experience with Jot, but it is for Gumby) to set the sample rate to the rate of the content you are playing, and let the DAC use its own filter.

    I think you'd be wrong :D
Anyway with regards to your problem..
If you connect stuff in parallel, the voltage remains the same. The loudness drop you experience when connecting headphones in parallel on one source is due to current dropping. It shouldn't happen with amps, cause their current input should be very very small to begin with. So that means you can connect more amps to the same dac. If you do this, you probably will get ground loops if amps are earthed. But that's not your problem.

Now, different amps have different ways they regulate loudness (the knob part) but basically, it's not strange that the same position gives you simmilar loudness on the same headphone. I wouldn't worry about it. There's an easy way to test this. While listening, just disconnect the other amp. Sound level will probably remain the same and all's probably gonna be good.

But, if you can use balanced, I see no reason why not to. It's always better.
