I think you'd be hitting yourself forever more for letting that crimson go.

Sometimes you're just not in the mood for sitting your ass down proper and listening.

Now if you hadn't sat down and used it for a year, then yeah I'd say it's time to find that stuff a new home.

My experience is that it always easy to upgrade, but hard to downgrade (sound quality).
You notice the differences (for the worse) on the way down.

I have thought numerous times about selling my Gungnir Multibit and scaling back to a modi MB (which I too have owned and liked a lot, in fact it was what led me to buy the Gungnir Multibit), but just can't let it go. I can't really see how I could spend the $5-600 difference so as to improve my experience of my music, and in fact can't imagine that same amount improving my experience of my life in general regardless of how it were spent, not in comparison to the improvement in my quality of life that the Gungnir Multibit seems to have provided. That sounds like bs/hype but is true for me. Maybe that says more about the state of my life than the quality of the component, but that is how I have evaluated that particular quandary.

As to the amp question, at the price, just buy the Vali and if you decide to sell the LC, you can always do that later. If you change your mind later, obtaining another LC might be problematic. The Vali is a commodity at this point. Btw, I have one of those too as a second amp. Don't see myself getting rid of it either. Good luck. Will be curious about your decision.

    hi guys!

I have an HD800 in which I did the "anaxilus" mod with foams with stickers on one side (found it through innerfidelity at that time).

Coming to the point, I need to now put it back to its stock form. So I removed all the foams but now I'm left with some sticky residue on the metal ring which is a real pain to remove.

Do you guys have any experience removing such a thing? if so what's your advise, product recommendation?
I already tried and the nail polish remover solution but in vain.

    Cheers,

Isn't nail polish remover mainly acetone, which is potentially very nasty on some plastics? I used acetone on Lego recently and it started melting the Lego. I wouldn't get it anywhere near my headphones, unless that metal ring is totally removable.

For sticky residue, something like Goo Gone should work.

Edit: Acetone and ABS, with a Millennium Falcon theme. Jump to about 6 minutes.

I my luck I didn’t try it directly on the headphones but on an other metal only surface. Thanks for the head’s up. I live in France so I need to look for the equivalent of “goo gone”.

The generic term for in English is simply "degreaser." It should be easy to locate a similar product.

I’d keep your current rig. I sometimes go a while not listening to my best headphone gear. Get into binge watching something or reading. Then I’m back to listening everyday again. I’ve thought of scaling back over the years. Glad I haven’t. Just my two cents.

    Hi all,

I'm looking for a cheap DAC to set up a small secondary rig. Specifically, what's the apparent sonic differences between a Modi 2 and a Modi 3? I have no problems buying a generation old if it's not backwards in sound quality.

The Modi 2, at least Uber, had 2 different AKM chips, the 4396 and 4490. The former was a bit grainy sounding. The Modi 3 also uses a 4490 and is smoother and more spacious than the 4396 M2U that I have. I have not heard the Modi 2 4490 but I'd bet it's close(r) to the Modi 3.

Posting this question mostly as a sanity check w/regards to the EC AF currently bating and taunting me (daily, hourly...) in the FS section. Current home HP rig: Gungnir A2-->Freya OG w/toobz-->MDxEC ZDT Jr-->SDR HD800. Who's been around all these things and can tell me with confidence that an upgrade to EC AF is worth the nearly-order-of-magnitude price jump from MDxEC ZDT Hr to EC AF?

Or, am I better off going for Yggdrasil? How much of the "spooky" realism in EC AF manifests in the ZDT Jr? So far, I'm very pleased with the tonal balance of the ZDT Jr, but it's not totally effortless. Things can sound like they're reaching the end of their tonal density/treble expansiveness/openness and a little flat compared to my speaker rig, like ZDT Jr is the one thing holding the HP chain back.

Or, I'm an idiot and need to just shaaatupp and find more music?

(I'm okay with that last one, too.)

Did a bit of listening again. Thanks for all the opinions. Sanity says I’m not strapped for cash and I like my rig, so no downsizing right now.

    Hi,

Has anyone been delighted with a particular upgrade cable for the AKG K812 headphones?

I've enjoyed the K812s for a couple of years with an Atlas Zeno cable, which has been wonderful. However, despite me treating the cable with the utmost care, it has started to fail, apparently due to being too weak to handle light bending in normal home use.

I have reverted to the original 3m AKG cable but the sound quality through it is comparatively so poor that I end up preferring my cheap ATH M50x headphones!

A quick search online reveals these possibilities:

£60 Designacable Belden Star-Quad cable + Neutrik jack

    £83 Oido Pellucid-PLUS Series cable

I don't know how they compare. I've had good results with Designacable's instrument leads, so I'd be tempted to go with their cable. I've searched online and in the forums and haven't seen much advice on this specifically. Any thoughts?

Need a recommendation for bluetooth IEMs. Use case is for mowing the lawn. I keep getting wired IEMs ripped out of my ears because I have to duck under shrubs and shit. Behind the neck design, with hooks over the ear. My yard can be a wrestling match. For that reason, $50 max, they're probably gonna end up under the mower eventually.

Looking for good isolation, but don't wanna spend the money for noise cancelling. Microdynamics, plankton, soundstage - bugger all that. I just want something that doesn't have any weird peaks or dips and loud enough to be heard over the mower.

I did find these on eBay. That's the sort of design I'm looking for.

The problem is going to be sufficient isolation to hear them over the mower without having them so loud that they could cause hearing damage. I have never had noise cancellers, but that might not be all that effective anyway depending on the frequency of the noise from the mower, as noise cancellation is usually most effective only at particular frequencies, though I am certainly no expert. When looking for iems for use on a motorcycle, I ended up having to go with ciems as that was the only way to attenuate ambient noise sufficiently. Probably too expensive for your use case in any event. Some Ety er6 with triple flange tips, which are the most isolating non-custom iems I found, were marginal at best. They felt like they were so far into my ears they were almost touching each other (and constantly being pushed in further by a helmet, which presumably won't be an issue). I will be curious to know what you find, as it may be relevant for me as well. Good luck.

I was always fond of using the budget Soundmagic E10 wired iem under Peltor hearing protection when mowing in GA; now I pay someone in FL.

I haven’t heard Soundmagic’s bluetooth offerings but seriously consider wearing hearing protection like this over them: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00009LI4K/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_i_hUyeDbYYXF1ZR
It helps you keep the volume down and protect your ears.

Would the latest Bifrost provide more bass than the Modi Multibit and Modi 3? I am super digging the ECP-L2 with a modded HD800 right now, but I also have a SOHA II on hand that is giving me some really nice big-booty bass. It doesn't quite hold up in resolution or refinement, so I was wondering if I could get better bass via my DAC. The Modi 3 does give me a tiny bit more vs the Multibit, but it also gets a little tizzier and less layered.

I don't remember the Modi too well (any generation or version), but I thought I knew Bifrost very well (every generation and every version). This version of Bifrost Multibit seems to trade big-bad bass for small-better bass. Basically, everything else I own has more bass - Onyx, RDAC, Gungnir (Multibit A2 has less bass compared to previous generations, but much more bass than latest Bifrost Multibit).

I recall the tizz from Modi, which is why I never kept these for long. Tizz is not there in Bifrost, but Bass is not there either. I'd planned to wait until I had a couple more ears (this weekend) but will try to post my impressions shortly.

Can anybody give me a hand ID'ing or giving any info about my dad's speakers?

No identifying marks on it, other than the numbers on the back. The store that sold these doesn't seem to exist anymore (at least in name) and a search online doesn't clarify much either, with only one thread I found tangentially mentioning the Unitron 17s. Searching for a Unitron company doesn't seem to work too.

Intention is to sell them for my dad to help with relocation funds, but I'll take first dibs on buying them if I like how they sound. I want to give him a fair price either way if they're worth something.
