    You'd luuuuurve India!

Socialist and liberal have become swear words. They no longer bear much relationship to the actual philosophies and principles they represent.

Mind you, perhaps some of the greatest offenders are the politicians who profess to fly under those flags. In UK, Margaret Thatcher said that she would destroy socialism. She did not succeed: it took Tony Blair to do that!

Take it easy, @Deep Funk, hard as that may be in this mad, crazy, and now even more potentially-lethal, world. Take good care, and drink plenty of tea :)

New data keeps coming in...it is called science and it is revealing that the death rate is not the current fave one size fits all number, open your eyes, raise your hopes, you crap on Trump and then take the White House recommendations as gospel, weird scientists

The wrong set. There is wine or champagne in your glass. It doesn't disinfect. Alcohol should be 40 degrees
Alcohol with a strength below 30 degrees does not destroy microorganisms.

    Here is the correct set.

" Without sufficient data, doctors based their recommendations on the idea that the coronavirus spread like influenza."
Had they used antibody testing to determine infections they might not have done this. At some point, maybe already in some areas, we will have reached an extreme saturation level of exposed people, at which point, the lockdown serves no purpose.

WRT serology tests, it's not surprising that more people have been exposed than the limited PCR testing of high risk individuals found. Cali at 4% and Miami at 6% are doing OK, but that is still with exceptional measure taken to keep those numbers very low in overall terms. New York is at 15% in pretty much the same time frame, but look at the difference in what it took to get to that number. I think it is safe to say that if Cali and Florida were at 15% at this point in time, they would be using ice rinks for morgues as well. Spreading it out as long as possible is key. This virus is going to be around for a long time yet.

Funny, when you consider observations from people who are in this fieid, doing it for a living instead of for a government, everything seems to change.
    And from elsewhere:
    https://www.aier.org/article/an-egr...suffused-with-incense-and-lugubrious-accents/
"In a fascinating open letter to German Prime Minister Angela Merkel, epidemiologist Mihai Grigoriu concludes that with the French study, corroborated by findings from a Stanford antibody seroprevalence study in Santa Clara county, “the case for extreme measures collapses like a house of cards.” Grigoriu says that since the virus has already spread widely in the general population, efforts to stop further spread are both futile and destructive."

I was born and raised in a region that has been a natural hotbed of cholera for the past 2000 years. Neither I, nor my relatives, nor any of the local residents were ill with cholera.
Of course, cholera is not spread by a virus, but the response of our immune system to viruses is very similar.

Humanity will get over the disease and get immunity from this version of the coronavirus until more evil strains appear.

No need to argue. Georgia has volunteered and we will all be learning. It's pretty much win win (for other states watching) whichever way it goes. Hey, someone's got to do it sooner or later.

Like extreme leftwingers arcing back to the same idiocy as the extreme right. All are equal, but some are more equal than the others.

Then don't vote for Republicans and for Trump anymore. Trump nowadays is pushing for Socialist policies and you are too blinded with partisanship to see it.

I knew when he was running that he is taking former Democrat socialist policies and sold it to the GOP under the hashtag #Freedom.

There is no conversation anywhere to be found on any subject that would not end up with Trump. Please...

OK I was watching interview with the professor Neil Fergusson, no not the smart one, a historian, but the dumb Fergusson, a professor of Imperial College, the author of the famous model that is being revised down every week . He was responding to a dismissal of his model by an epidemiologist from Sweden. It is a great example of what mathematical models are about. The assumptions, period. Everyone can write a code and the equations for epidemiologic models are well known. And Fergusson got wrong basic things: hospital capacity were not supposed to change (in fact it increased threefold in almost every country), the mortality rate estimate as a fraction of confirmed cases are only two examples.
By the way, the dumb Fergusson was unwilling to discuss the COVID-19 real numbers, he was entirely focused on defending his model. I did not last to the end of it

I would prefer not to think too hard about your last sentence. We have a vaccine(s) for flu, but it is a constantly moving target, changing up from year to year in an endless game of cat and mouse. Every once in a while we have a particularly bad one. We will hopefully have a vaccine for Coronavirus soon too, but too soon to say how fast that target will move. Some Coronaviruses are endemic, and cause about 15% of common colds, but we have also had SARS1, MERS, (both very deadly but much less infectious) and now COVID19 in a fairly short time, Hopefully new strains of deadly COV don't become a regular thing like with flu.

Minnesota's case will be instructive, along with Georgia's, though I suspect for different reasons.

Mayo and University of Minnesota will be running sero+diagnostics at about 20K tests a day shortly. Testing restrictions are easing, and contact tracing infrastructure is ramping up. Relatively low infection rates as of now, and "stay at home" orders will lift with the testing/tracing capability mostly in place.

The governor used the time bought with the stay at home orders to ramp hosptial/critical care capacity, so we may be better able to handle reentrant infection spread should it occurr.

I've been happy with the leadership here, and I've seen more masks than not out and about at stores lately.
Geographic luck and competent people may spare us the worst, and hopefully we can help some of the squarer adjacent states that have been lagging on preparation if this hits them aggressively.

Shit experiment to have to run this way, though.

California has been experiencing a heat wave lately and people have been going to the beach, even if it's closed.

Spoke to my mom yesterday, she was saying how the health clinic she and my step dad work at gave away 20k face masks for free for the community.

My step dad was directing traffic outside in 90f heat in full ppe for 3 hours and said he was never going to do that again.

Brief update from Queens: was out shopping today. Most stores in the neighborhood are requiring masks and gloves to enter. This probably is a big contributing factor to such widespread use of masks. I am seeing near 100% use. I saw 1 stooped Chinese grandma without a mask, and 1 bus driver, but They were it.

I keep seeing older people doing this thing where they wear the surgical mask so it only covers their nose and lips. They don’t stretch it down to cover the chin.

Sound of ambulances has noticeably dropped in frequency. Haven’t heard any today and only a handful over the last few days.

A friend on the other side of my building checked into Langone hospital. His wife and kids had mild cases. He’s the only one with more serious respiratory issues. No ventilator and prognosis is good.

A neighbor I don’t know well lost her husband due to COVID. She has a six year old daughter and is currently 8 months pregnant.

My wife cut my hair today. As another friend said after his wife cut his hair: I’ve paid for worse haircuts.
