I used to have the precursor to the 2i2 which was the Saffire 6 (technically a 2i4). More or less the same though. I thought it was alright with the HD650, but it was a but wiffly with the HD598.

Well, in general the HD598 is wiffly relative to the HD650. But yes, there are better amps out there.

On the flip side, I do like how the PX100 sounds out of the Focusrite.

I had another amp a while ago that let me bypass output resistors on the headphone jack with some jumpers. The HD650 was more or less the same either way, but the HD598 was definitely wifflywafflier. I don't have the right words, so I'm just making up adjectives. It was partly due to midbass bloom, but also just this weird sense of... loss of cohesion? bleh, hard to explain and my memory of it is too far gone now.

I really wished some of this portable pro interfaces had better headphone driving support. The 2i2 is not that bad IMO, but it definitively could be better.

I kinda mentioned it before, but I really do suspect it's a bit of a checkbox feature rather than something well thought out.

Very much so, with holdover ideologies from the olden days when there were weird 120 and 600 ohm "standards" that don't really apply to headphones, but kinda stuck around because they used the same plugs.
