He hit a dragon in full flight, then missed a larger target struggling to take off and far closer... kinda weak story telling if you ask me...

I'm totally fine with the Night King killing a dragon, just how it went down was poor. I don't know if he was just showing off or possibly aiming for a weaker area under the wing or what... I just don't like the way it was presented.

True, for he wants Dany too for himself.

I don't think the Children were ever pals with the White Walkers. The White Walkers always wanted to kill everything alive, but the Children had powerful magic to protect themselves from them. The same kind of magic, presumably, was put on the Wall. So the White Walkers got confined to the North, and the Children continued living in enclaves protected by magic within the North.

The White Walkers however kept planning how to pierce the realm of the living for a long, long time, and my suspicion is that all the turmoil in Westeros, from Robert Baratheon's drunken misstep to Cersei's ascending, is nothing but powerful magic -- à la Melissande -- unleashed by the Night King on the realm in preparation for the White Walkers' attack, and in order to fatally weaken the realm of the men so that there is no one left to defend when the mayhem commences... (Things are not pitched like this in the books, but it's how it's always felt to me as the story progressed.)

Not pals, but the Children created the White Walkers to protect themselves from Men. But, as these things usually go, the Children lost control over their creation which ran rampant and started killing everything (including the Children themselves). This is when the Children and the men joined forces to fight the White Walkers.

This is my understanding, at least. I stand to be corrected.

*EDIT* On rereading your post, I think we're saying essentially the same thing. But, the fact that the Children CREATED the Walkers is important, I think.

Just caught up with this season.

What a big disappointment. Producers and scriptwriters trying too hard to be clever, and end up spewing some real cringeworthy heavy exposition crap. To think this used to be a major plus point of GoT...

Must they honestly force in dialogue between every single character? Some of it is just straight awkward. The scene with Jorah and Jon stopping to chat about ownership of the sword was lame as hell.

Major issues with the pacing of this film. Grey Worm and the Unsullied have probably died 10 times over by now, or starved 5 times over, whichever you choose.

Benjen swooping in and saving the day was an idiotic deus ex machina moment. What the f**k was Jon thinking separating himself from the group in the first place just to slay a couple of irrelevant zombies?

The show isn't that bad compared to some of the dross out there, but it's a major slide from what has been a truly (consistently) excellent series so far.

Viserion's fate is going to be the central focus in episode 7. It's gonna rain shit down on the Wall, but then Bran is going to intervene by warging (?) into Jon, who has a connection to dragons by virtue of his Targy blood, but also has some ice shit going on (KoTN?) and will thus wrestle control of Viserion back. Calling it.

Yeah, I keep having to remind myself of the good stuff that's still there. The Hound in episode 1 this season was very well done. Why? Because we've spent 7 seasons now watching this character grow and change, which made those scenes really pay off.

The reunions and first meetings this seasons have been fun for the same reason.

The Loot Train Battle (despite the horrific name) was amazing as long as you ignore the silly escape by Jamie and Bronn at the end.

So, there's reason to keep watching. It's simply time to finally lower my expectations.

The Production Value is still really respectable IMO, for a television show. Even an HBO 10 episode a season show. Those dragons look Good.

ABSOLUTELY. The behind the scenes video posted earlier is mind-blowing.

Which goes to show you the importance of story-telling. A spectacle only has meaning if there's a solid story to back it up.

I'm hoping to understand the importance behind Arya's and Sansa's cat fight. Most of the stuff shown in the past had some major future repercussion.

I kind of also understand the power of the Night King better today (not yesterday). Dragons have been around for a while and they seemingly were not a problem for the Night King. There was talk about ice dragons before. So obviously he had ways to handle them. Only the wall is holding him off. The javelin throw might not have been the best of explanations for Night King's dragon handling capabilities. But he is a powerful being, and he probably has quite a few spells under his sleeve. That makes the Night King pretty much impossible to stop unless something else comes out. It was not dragons what stopped the Night King before, and there were plenty before.

Jaimie and Bronn's escape could have been done better. Jaimie did not have to charge Dany with a dragon in the middle. Simply understand that there was not much to do (which he actually did) and escape with as many of his remaining forces as he could. There is bravery and nobility in saving as many of your men as possible from certain death. This would have avoided the crazy jump into the shallow water, that magically changes into deep water, and Bronn's baywatch skills to save armored Jaimie.

And yes, Jon Snow had no business fighting dead stuff when everybody was ready to go. I guess he felt the dragons gave him an upper hand. Apparently not. On the other hand, had he just lifted off, there wouldn't be a need to explain his miracle survival event through his uncle. Viserion could have just died as they were taking off, javelin throw or not.

Furthermore, the "suicide mission" was very stupid. Yet another Tyrion face-palm moment. Nobody is perfect. Which is always the case on this show. And that is good IMO. From the show's perspective, it was somewhat necessary. It showed that dragons are no match for the White Walkers. At least in the one digit numbers. And shows the magnitude of the threat. There is more to the Night King than necromancing.

He shouldn't have escaped at all.

You can't swim in armor like that (and with a golden hand to boot), and Bronn isn't going to be able to drag him all the way. And even if it WERE possible, why didn't Dany and crew just capture him? Did they assume he was dead (they sure don't seem shocked when he gets back to Kings Landing)? Were they just too lazy to drag him out? Did they get to a place that was unreachable by dragon? None of this makes sense.

And how much more sense would it have made for them to capture Jaime? This makes the conversation between himself and Tyrion far less contrived than having to find a way to break into Kings Landing. Then they release Jaime back to his sister with a message from their camp. So easy and simple and so much more plausible.

Exactly. That scene was forced. If escaping was seen as necessary for the plot, Jaimie should have just escaped with Bronn by horse and on ground. There is chaos and fire. Easier to explain that. If they wanted to show knight Jaimie, plenty of chances as he makes his way out of the battle field with skill.

Like you said, they could have captured Jaime (I like that approach). And that would open a lot of other possibilities. It would have been a great venue to show Danny is not like the Mad King. On the other hand, Jaimie would have not bend the knee, and that would likely cause his demise the Tarly way. But is plausible that he would be left to live as a bargain chip. Like I said, capture opens a lot of possibilities.

Escape by ground or capture, w/o all that contrived jump in the water solution, would have worked IMO.

I'm not sure why that water scene was necessary and it diminishes story telling quality.

Half of the decisions this episode can be summarized with Tyrion's blood pressure rising, and just asking the other characters the following:

(have gotten some pretty good mileage out of this one so far)

To credit the writers though, Davos' rowing comment with Gendry made giggle like an idiot.

LOL! As far as Jaimie's escape, I remember we were discussing more the likelihood of him being captured and loosing his other hand.

They wanted that cliffhanger water cooler moment but they're long past the moment that was a believable outcome so people mostly just made fun of it.

It's seems like a lot of the season's story has been spent making sure it lasts until the end, because none of this has been written and they only know the general plot points. There's no way KL could have stood up to three armies and all three dragons and then a united Westeros could have faced the snow zombie apocalypse together, but we've been led down an improbable path where now they have to go capture a white walker and negotiate with Cersei? Not just bad writing but writing that makes the characters look bad.

Yup. At the end of season 6 I thought KL was in the bag. Easy. Effortlessly. Was not so given Saucy's craziness and Tyrion/Varys gross miscalculations. Danny seems to be growing out of them.

And yes, Toys-R-Us doesn't stand a chance against the Walking Dead. They also did not stand a chance in the past either. The Anti-Nite-Pimp is needed, or folks in that universe just need to go home, watch TV, drink beer and enjoy it while it lasts.
