Hey folks, I recently joined SBAF in search of some fresh air from HF. I've learned a ton in the time I've been enjoying this hobby, most of which has come through that site. However, the longer I've gone on, the more I've realized that in some ways I was a little naive in trusting other people's opinions and incessant hype before my gut. Could've saved a lot of money and time if I had been a little savvier in sorting through the hype-madness!

Someone earlier in this thread made the comment that the S/N ratio over there is pretty terrible. In a lot of ways, I agree!

I hope it was satirical trolling and the guy didn't mean it!

I'm going to close this thread, but wanted to address something first and reply to Peti, even though he is banned.

I know you are mocking HF, the rest of the thread seems to mock the assertion from this guy, but this can be kind of true. I've certainly heard these effects on the GSX2 amp, in my own words, with low gain sounding flatter and more boring, and high gain sounding more lively, but also more etched and sizzly. On the Ragnarok, the gain / feedback is just applied to the last stage (or maybe last two), so the effect is less, but there is still a bit of this going on, just way more subtle. The Leckerton UHA-6 exhibits this with its low and high gain switches too.

EC actually increased the gain by reducing the feedback on the Super iteration of the Zana Deux to deepen the soundstage, increase separation, detail, and liven up the sound. The penalty is was higher output Z, increasing it from 12 to about 20 ohms, but this seemed like the sweet spot for the expected dynamic headphones to be used on the amp.

The really sad case here is that this guy happened to be more right than not for most circuits, and people crapped on him, including yourself. There are some good posts on HF. Unfortunately, even the good ones get crapped on.

OK guys. Time to close this thread. I haven't heard someone bitch about HF for two weeks, so that means everyone who needed to be healed has been healed. I thought about closing this thread a long time ago. But it offered a kind of therapy for people to get their frustrations out on the North Korean regime, I mean HF management. It also provided me a good platform to take potshots at Jude and push his buttons in a way that I knew would piss him off. But this is getting boring now, and I haven't heard from any of my sources of Jude going on any temper tantrums against me lately, or him going out of the way to mess with what we do, or getting our friends fired from their jobs. The only thing might be him breaking press embargoes so he can have semi-exclusive content first, but I don't care about that anyway since one day, when HF gets knocked off its peg, there will be consequences, and him doing this only plays in the hands of manufacturers who are smart enough to leverage his insecurities.

But time to move on. SuperBestAudioFriends is no longer defined by Head-Fi or what Jude or the moderators at Head-Fi do to us. We've experienced steady managed growth. At any one time, we have near 500 users online. Internet advertising outfits have noticed and now are giving me calls. (No, we are not selling out. The Asian or Russian bride ads do well enough). We have a decent enough warchest, all through donations, to purchase gear that interests us, to put on the loaner program, and to evaluate without any entanglements. There haven't been too many weirdos lately. We've found a middle ground in moderation, not without hiccups. and we are getting better at it. We have a meritocratic system, and a great group of trusted reviewers, all of whom have slightly different sonic preferences. Some processes and guidelines are starting to get formalized. SuperBestAudioFriends is its own thing now. Head-Fi is completely irrelevant to what we want to do. And finally we are simply the better site. We don't have the breadth of content, but poor quality content is not worth any more than no content, and dishonest content is worth negative.

So no more bitching about Head-Fi. Thread locked.
