I need to get the first gen CD of Sports. I only have the MFSL version. It's actually enjoyable.

I have the Greatest Hits but I know it sucks that I only listen to in the car.

That chart tells you nothing about how it might have been EQ'd. The comment was about brightness and harshness. I'll even bet the early version has pre-emphasis that modern DACs ignore.

The MSFL version is much fuller and more even sounding and closer to the vinyl, which I also have .

When I read "lack of dynamic nuance" I was thinking dynamic compression. My apologies.

Recorded on a cassette-based Portastudio in a room above a chip shop. Brilliant songs played badly. A decent system will be able to dig surprisingly deep and actually provide some enjoyment, though. The first time that I enjoyed the sound of this album (rather than just the message) was a revelation.

Completely agree with the comments in the thread so far... although inadvertently half the music I listen to is already in the "not the best" recording/producing/audiophilemagic category so I don't really have to go out of my way for this.

For demoing - Although my eventual plan (and how I've already tried to spend my money so far) is to have certain equipment dedicated to certain types of music or moods, IMO if equipment can't make my less perfect music passable, then yes, is the equipment/system really that great? However, I won't pick music that I know just isn't going to be "great" on any system - no point in "failing" a setup by default either.

Some of my demo music after I play the more "audiophile" stuff. This is not a knock on any of the below music - as a matter of fact, I prefer a lot of this stuff over standard "audiophile" stuff for normal listening:
The Used - Various tracks from the first 3 albums - good recording/mixing/mastering/etc., but not stellar. Also very busy songs with a lot going on, can listen to a lot of different things at once.
    www.youtube.com/watch?v=JXSce3eQtHk
Red Hot Chili Peppers - Parallel Universe and a few other tracks on the Californication album. IMO borderline example of everything not to do when producing/etc.
    www.youtube.com/watch?v=VIfxDoQDaFE
All That Remains - Fall of Ideals album - a lot going on
Arch Enemy - Enemy Within (a lot going on) and Silverwing (original recording, listening mostly to how much I can hear in the vocals beyond just a "generic scream")
    www.youtube.com/watch?v=_8TRkJuItPc
Katy Perry - Dark Horse - can I hear all the little bits of sounds and overproduction added in?
Taylor Swift - Blank Space - no good reason, just like this as a test track
AFI - Days of the Phoenix - same as above
Dillon Francis - All That - bass and speed
Major Lazer + RDX - Lose Yourself - hard to put into a few words on a forum
Pablo Casals (specifically old imperfect recordings) - a lot going on with the cello when he plays, but the system has to be good enough to pull it out.
