That is a very clean T10. Don't think I have ever seen one that well preserved

@dB The ebay estate flipper described it as “very fine” condition.

@rd Would like to know what you think of T10.

    More impressions and measurements later.

Now that's a mint pair right there... If they need pad replacement you could try ubanite replacement pads, or maybe these.

much more difficult to mod than the Yamahas and once modded properly different but pretty similar sound. ie Mine are about equal technically to my YH-1 but just a slightly different sound.

stock they sound like ass just like the Yamahas.

Were you able to fix the 6 KHz peak?

Typical of supra-aurals to be difficult getting a good seal with minidsp EARS. Thin pads made it extra difficult. 5 quick attempts.:

    L/Rs with best seal. Compensated.:
    Fostex T10 comp.jpg
*reminder that imbalance variables include measurement rig, placement on said rig, environmental noise, compensation, headphones, etc.

In ortho roundup nickn explained that there were two versions of T10. One with a black headband name plate, and another in silver. The black’s driver assembly had a printing that said “aluminum compatible solder only” and silver’s did not. Silvers were later production. He found in his experience of owning 4pairs of T10 that the silvers to have more extension up top which in comparison made the black sound darker or bassier. A mystery.

Edit: First few pages of this thread has a nice bunch of T10 impressions/measurements from others.

For your interpretation nick n’s posts: 1, 2. I dont think he meant bass-lite. It seems he prefers the silvers.

Just found out that these probably need very shallow pads (like stock), though taller pads can sound decent, the sound seems to become veiled + etched in the low treble.

I’ve never found a replacement pad for any supra-aural vintage ortho that fit or sounded right. Best to find a unit with good condition pads.

Fostex T10 needs mods. Too lean and peaky (6kHz?). Stock damping looks like 1 layer of foam and 1 layer of wool. Removing wool to see what happens.

YH-2 I think would benefit from resonance control with it’s cheap thin plastic enclosure. Just a bit of damplifier around driver. Unfortunately opening will destory stock foam damping since they will turn to dust as soon as disturbed. They are already disintegrating and heading to cause trouble anyway so cant be avoided.

Loss of extension. Highs don't sound as dark as look. And I've only listened to some of this unfamiliar album so far but it sounds good.:

Edit: Transients dropped and bass sounds less nice (depth and control), less interesting but more listenable - not great. How to fix? Interesting how 6kHz looks unchanged, other stuff around it moved.

I have mine with two layers of some sort of rolled / pressed cotton material, it's 2-3mm in thickness and more breathable than the stock disc. Looks like this:

    photo_2021-04-04_13-20-12.jpg photo_2021-04-04_13-20-10.jpg

Got some dynamics back without dipping the upper midrange too much.

probably poor fit on the measurement rig . Tyll said he had trouble with supra vs circum-aural . Not sure I still have that T10 but I do have 3 others ;) ..dB

    Nah, a bit shouty.

The headband’s a little clampy and is too much when combined with the thin pads. Safe to stretch a bit?

Edit: One last mod then moving on to alternate pads. I know not recommended in general but I feel these might benefit.

Hybrid pad idea borrowed from @stratocaster .

Strat used 1cm thick felt. This is more like 2mm thick felt. Just compressed together to try - no glue.
