I'm pretty sure Mapleshade makes sure feet. Mine came in a 3 pack for $125 if I remember correctly. Maple shade has a large variety of brass footer styles. I don't remember exactly which ones I bought.

I love JK's DIY table here and velvet's in his how to thread, but are there any good prebuilt racks for around $200/$250? For the moment the time savings would even out the added monetary expense.

Also, does anyone wall mount their turntable? I'm considering giving that a go as well.

Salamander audio racks are good and reasonably inexpensive. Start in the $130 range and go up, are expandable and upgradeable. To get similar to jk and velvet's your going to be in the $400- 500 range though.

I've looked at wall mounting previously, but I move my setup too often. Coupling the record player to studs in your wall are interesting though.

Awesome, thank you! I feel like if I'm wall mounting the turntable, I have less of a need for a high end isolating rack.

I have one of the VTI racks. About $300 from amazon. You can check the various color combos on the VTI website.

    http://www.vtimanufacturing.com/vti_product/bl404-audio-rack/

Definitely recommend the 13" bottom section as it puts the top at a nice height. (I am 6'1")

The MDF looks pretty good and the rest of the rack is nicely welded and should support the specified weight no problem. I would have no concerns at all about sticking a 50-100lb turntable on the top of it with 100lbs+ of stuff on the other racks. Currently mine has my 55lb phono pre up top, Ragnarok, Yggdrasil, Mutec MC3 and TASCAM DA-3000 in it.

    Would recommend.

Thanks Chris! That seems like a reasonable price for a solid rack.

I've had a Salamander rack for a few years and to be honest, over carpet even with the Salamander spikes, I can't recommend it. The level of the shelves is pretty hard to get right and even when it measures level it looks crooked. It's pretty maddening and at some point I just give up. Every time I want to change components I run into this problem!

That's good to know, looks like VTI is in the lead at the moment.

Hi! I'm curious about this issue of yours. Which Salamander rack do you have? Is it the archetype series or the synergy? Also, are all the fittings tightened up nicely?

I ask because I've never seen or read about this. It tends to be a solid rack. I use 2 of them, one in each system and they are a joy to own. Especially the nice walnut and cherry finishes! The adjustability is fantastic as well.

Salamander archetype, 5 shelves, it's with the salamander brand floor spikes on carpet. It gets the job done, but I end up spendin way too much time messing with it to get as level as I can.

Put it this way, even with only the top shelf as an example, threading it all the way to the top on the stoppers and screwed in tight it is crooked.

I also load it with rediciolousy heavy components so it's no doubt bottoming out on the carpet.

Aaah got it. Good to know! I don't have direct experience with the Archetype Series. I am using the Synergy Twin's.

I ended up ordering a VTI BL404 rack. It has a good weight rating and nice aesthetics. I was able to get it for less than I could find the Salamander Archetype (although it has one less shelf but that's okay), and I don't have to worry about not being able to get the shelves level.

Regarding nice racks (TM), what do folks think is the minimum depth that would cover the likely gamut of turntable footprints from VPI, Kuzma, etc. The usual suspects. Voluptuous racks look great, but for me, the slimmest that does the job is the most desirable. I'm currently working with 18" sapele shelves but would like to reduce to 16" if that isn't going to be a limitation in the future.

    Thanks!

Which TT is that, and is the footprint any smaller? For example, I think a VPI Classic 3 has a 1" smaller footprint than outer dimension... But, sigh, I think 18" is the safest, most future-proof bet. I'm just cramming too much stuff in to my office now. Need to find a better spot in the house for the piano, I think.. Heh.

Just double checked my classic 1 - base is 15-1/2 deep and as you said feet a bit less. But, the tone arm wiring box and rca's overhang the back another inch or so. Leave a bit of room, especially if you plan on placing right up against the wall.

Really nice to see your stand as I am in the middle of creating one myself
I really love your maple shelves
I am very impressed by their thicness
I guess their mass is very impressive too
Couldn't justify the cost of the project for a long time but could no longer live with my old stand which was make due to start with
I laminated 3/4 Baltic birch sheets that were 2 ft x4 ft to start
I had all the sheets cut down at the same time to avoid variation
Bought it at Home Depot but their saw blade could of been sharper as BB is very dense and therefore demanding to cut
As I needed four shelves l bought six sheets at $45 Cdn
Also a half inch sheet to cover the mostly sunken nuts at the top shelf
My top and bottom are composed of whole pieces
My middle two shelves have a whole layer and a pieced together layer to save money
I used 3/4 inch thread all
I like the visual balance given my 20 x 30 inch shelves
But it also gave me more weight
I had to buy five foot thread all and cut it down to the height that I needed
The nuts cost $1.90 and the washers cost $1.20
    I needed 32 of each
I will try to post some pictures

Ok finally (after many months of dilly dallying and being busy at work and moving down to SoCal) finished the audio rack. This was inspired and guided by @bazelio 's rack with floating shelves (sounds like it should be a miyazaki film). It felt a lot like Lego for adults. Total project cost somewhere in the $1300-1500 ballpark (maple shelves and aluminum structure was most of that (~600ish each), then sorbothane and edensound brass footers were another ~100ish each). I'm super happy with the rack and is a significant step up from what i would've been able to afford within that price range out in the world. Thanks again Brian for helping me out with this project!

Here's what the metal looks like disassembled:

with treated wood (pre-stain followed by 3 coats of polyshade):

    howl's floating shelves:

also loaded sand into the speaker stands which serves the dual purpose of 1) making them sound better and 2) making them relatively more child proof:

EDIT: here's a pic with gear to calm @bazelio's wrath:

Again, turned out killer! It's a labor of love, and worth it in the end. But you forgot one thing: To post the pic with all your badass shit on the rack!!!!!
