Add background checks which include criminal records. When it occurs someone has a history of violence do not grant the permit.

Guns have a purpose but make sure the owner is not an idiot or a criminal.

P.S. Yes I am Dutch. I am not anti-gun-ownership just against guns in the wrong hands (criminals and idiots). In the Netherlands there have been "incidents" were even police officers were incapable of using their guns thus killing a kid "by accident". Makes you wonder. Makes you trust the police even less...

The majority (about 20,000 of 33000 or so) of the deaths from gun violence in the USA are from suicide.

Firearms account for almost 50% of all suicides (in the US). However, the US doesn't seem to be doing too badly on a per capita basis overall.

Pretty sure there isn't easy access to firearms in Japan, but they manage to find other methods (train tracks seem popular).

To bring this back on topic, the Japanese are extremely well behaved, almost to a fault. It's really hard to get a "no" out of them. Oh, but they do like to slurp their ramen really loudly.

The bottom line is that BAD people are goint to do BAD things with or without a gun (knife, vehicle, explosives, etc). Bad guys are going to get a gun regardless of what the laws are...

We already have federal background checks for gun purchases.

If only we could ask Gene Roddenberry what phaser replication pattern laws are going to be like in the Federation, we might be able to figure this one out. Working for the UN, I am now worried one of the 17 sustainable development goals for 2030 does not include eradication of "bad people", "bad things", or "bad thoughts."

The conversation here about guns will not end well and will bring unnecessary noise. The USA is so goddam polarized nowadays. SBAF is somewhere to go to get away from all THAT, at least for a few minutes.

True, but it's way easier to do so in the US than pretty much anywhere else in the world. For bad and good people. So there are lots more around when good people turn bad. Or just get confused or upset. I'll hypothesize that one of the reasons the Swiss suicide rate is so high is because soldiers' service rifles are stored privately at home.

This chart is a bit scary.

My bad. I think I was the one who took it in this direction comparing watermelon knives to assault rifles.

Anyway, you guys keep your guns. I'll stay over here on the other side of the Pacific (except for when I visit the Schiitr next February :D).

Edit: I think this entire thread is pretty much just noise anyway.

@gixxerwimp , as a non-Asian, I have found this thread to be really interesting (good noise). Talk about gun violence is bad noise.

If OP ever logs in to check on this thread ('last seen' at the time of creating the thread), they're going to be very confused.

That being said, this thread has been the most enjoyable history lesson I've had in years!

There is truly tons of fascinating history in Asia and we mostly didn't even get out of Taiwan!

It's only fascinating until you realise it's going to be on the test and then you go "ugh".

I still did take more history modules than I should have though.

So uh... what happened to Japan from '98 onwards?

edit: or rather, what caused that dip in the early 90's?

    Uninformed speculations:
Might somehow be related to this, plus economic factors (it seems to coincide with their stock market prices)? Big economic surge repressing the rate for a bit, but a reversion towards the mean after the market correction?
