i decided to share this and start a new thread to hopefully start up interesting conversation among others.

the friend i met couple weeks ago that came over to audition the altec model 14's asked if i needed a cd player today . he made the offer cause felt bad for taking the schitt sys pre free of charge i gave him. told him i didn't care, i made the offer but, said yea, i can actually use one actually since only ones i have is computer and nad 5000 on loan which is pretty decent. so he came over tonight and dropped off a nice looking Sony dvp s7000 dvd player.

read a bit on it before he came over that it was top of the line in 2000 from sony that retailed over 1k and while little info i can find, lot considered it a wonderful transport and cd player and liked it lot more than more modern oppo's so i guess i didn't do so bad. i am giving it a listen with the money for nothing cd from Dire Straits he left in there haha(probably forgot bout it. i did that before when i sold my cd decks off before..was bit irritated later on cause had my favorite tool cd in it lol). surprised by the sound. very clean and transparent. it just comes through super clean and seems have enough strong output signal since i can blast the crown amps and still come out clean(weak signal makes them sound meh, with no bass and cloudy sound). later on i test it against my echo audiofire 2 in a bit but, i like what i hear so far. he told me i could have something else but, i think i'm keeping this.

so, what is everyone else thoughts on using a old dvd player as a cd player and your experience? so far mine is turning out pretty good and like it. would take pic but, g/f using phone to draw with. i mean it's just plain black box. it has headphone output but only headphone i have is my modded fostex and i need get new cable for them so no headphone testing but, i think it'll do pretty good job i would guess.

Edit: the sony came out in 1997 and is actually a sony es in a dvd cab with separate laser for dvd reading. Not sure what model but, was mentioned on a diy fourm for modding. Probably gonna listen to it bit later on some more to get more feel for it. Works great as dvd player too. Great picture but seems very sensitive. Slight smug or scratch and it'll skip.

I use a Toshiba DVD player from 2001 as a CD transport; it works great. I haven't had the chance to sample other vintage DVD players, but I decided to end my pursuit for digital sources once I joined the vinyl nutjob world. Anyway, I coax the DVD player out to my Bifrost and use the Vali to listen through my headphones, so the only DVD player component I really use is the laser.

Not a DVD player, but I had an SFT-1 transport which I got given when I bought my SFD-1. They were sent to pcx so I paid to have the thing upgraded.

I really didn't like the sound of the thing when I got it and I didn't use it for about year, I decided to give it another try and the microprocessor died and basically I can't find a replacement.
I opened it up and was surprised to see that it was a pretty cheap/crappy phillips mechanism, the transformer and a lot for the other stuff is over engineered and overkill but the bits that count were really cheap phillips and sony stuff.

Don't get me wrong I love Sonic frontiers. But this was a really disappointing product and the fact that no replacement parts are available even from pcx who claim that the processors never die on these :/

i am not sure what dac is ran in the sony but from what i know it uses separate laser system for cd's and dvd's which is pretty cool. the panel slides down to access the controls. read somewhere it has a button for different filter selection whatever that means. i just been playing music ever since i got it. probably favorite cd player used so far. he replaced it with a more modern pioneer elite dvd player but, for video scaling features and so forth it seems. probably didn't know much on it since he's mostly a vinyl type as well.

i also have another toshiba dvd player sitting around but never liked it for cd's since never liked the sound too much but, worked pretty well as a dvd player. seem little muddie where wasn't very clear. the sony just lets things come through cleanly. first cd player i ever used, sounded like this to me. now i just need get more cd's haha. i always wanted to hear a sonic frontiers but never have luck with them. found one local before i believe but, guy was asking a lot for it.
