    In my experience here in the USA in the late 60s/early 70s: Parents had consoles. Teens wanted a component system, and that usually included a receiver. The serious guys bought pre-amps and power amps. And those in the middle bought integrated amps. Of course economics played a big part in all of that. I wasn't aware of what was going on in the UK back then.

    I read Stereophile and The Absolute Sound starting in the late 70s. They covered pre/power amps for the most part. I remember getting UK audio magazines in the 80s and seeing, almost exclusively, integrated amps being covered. I remember finding that strange at first. It wasn't what I was used to seeing in magazines.
