I was exploring China with radio.garden and by the providential hand of God I came across the satisfying insanity that is Shirley and Spinoza Radio. Truly the voice of our current times.

@DigMe That's some trippy stuff there. Reminds me of my youthful experimenting with altered states of consciousness.

Two tracks. That's it. Miles really knew how to rock. This link is the entire album, but take your pick... Both "Right Off" and "Yesternow" are equally awesome.

And in honor of Daft Punk breaking up today...

I actually really dig this. It's got this excellently dark and catchy vibe to it. None of the sounds are particularly special, but each one is perfectly dialed in. Something about the mix is just fantastic, so satisfying in every area. Channeling a bit of Daft Punk and maybe a little bit of The Weeknd. Maybe even something a bit like newer Tame Impala. It's funky and synthy. The sound itself just does it for me. I like it.

I remember trying to get into this dude in the mid 2010's and I just couldn't do it. The album had this opener that got me so psyched for this epically progressive EDM saga. It was this...

And then the first real track started and I wanna say I was well-done by 60%. Just completely fried to any music for the day. It was just a LOT of fast sounds with really sudden envelopes on them. Just slamming it all down the sidechain bus. To much high-frequency energy... just a lot of competing stuff surging in and out. Really it was a well-done mix, and I mean it. I can only imagine the time that went into assembling his kit for the album. He is meticulous as hell, really gunning for that consistency with his opus release. But sonically it is simply emotionally fucking exhausting to listen to. Oh it is just sickeningly sweet and bright. Just imagine the plainest, yet most overdone mid 2000's EDM-pop possible. You're riding nyan cat up to the top of rainbow anime tiddy mountain, rainbow gloop sloshing uncontrollably out of you and it just doesn't let up. Just that very tired, amped-up 'gamery' type of happy EDM. If there was one song on it to sum it up, it's this:

Now, I kind of like this song. You couldn't pay me to spend time listening to more music like this, but at the same time it's neat and I think the way he bends the envelope around to drive the flow and brings in all of these flurries of drastically different modulated sounds is actually kind of excellent. He comes up with some really clever and unique passages where everything is just very tightly interwoven. Like, maybe tighter than it should even be able to be. It feels like being on a roller coaster in the best and worst ways. I want to be able to enjoy it but I get disoriented and then I just can't. It's a very wholesome, childlike, high-octane fun and I am a very sad old man waiting for the end of this dream that's gone on for many nights too long.

So like, it's cool and all but it also fucking disgusts me and I can't stand it. I hate just the... utter sensibilities of it, or lack thereof. He clearly has production chops but his biggest thing is so far beyond overdone and the composition work is nearly bone dry... it's skeletal it its ability to support a complete song.

If his next full release sounds more like the first track in this post I'll be very down with that. The most recent album has a couple of incredible songs on it already. I'm glad I randomly decided to come back and give his music another go. Might be just in time to catch a good, easy album to toss into the stack for a while, if I'm lucky. I'm really hoping this marks a change towards something from him I can actually sit and appreciate.
