What makes a speaker suitable for nearfield listening?

I've heard of those two. They seem to me unnecessarily expensive.

Regardless of price, based only on specs, those two "tweeters" look more like midranges (800 to 5 kHz for Satori and 800 to 2k or 3k Wavecore). I would probably not use those for a 2-way. I might consider them for a 3-way.

Something similar in response from Dayton might be an RS52-AN-8, which I believe is used in the Zaph ZDT3.5 (Zaph Dayton Tower 3.5-way) .

EDIT: Maybe they don't roll off that much off-axis. But I prefer smaller than 1" tweeters for dispersion on a 2-way.

On the other side of the coin, the Satori tweeter can handle a low crossover point (1.7-2khz) with a L2 filter, extends way over 20 khz (it's a ring radiator) and comes from the designers of the Scanspeak Revelator drivers, can't go wrong with that thing for a 2 way IMO.

EDIT: also, while this may sound dumb, buying drivers of such reported quality kills audio nervosa (ie: omg how would this other mega expensive tweeter/woofer would sound like if I paid 50$ for all this goodness?) I know myself and I'm dumb in that sense lol

I believe there quite a few 1" and 1-1/8" tweeters than can handle 1.7-2kHz xcover and extend way over 20 kHz.

The question is, how well can all of those handle 15, 30 and 60 degree off-axis performance. I don't like narrow sweet spots. I also find that superior off-axis performance helps with imaging.

That said, If you are planning to put speakers way back from the listening position and have no more than 15 degree off axis listening spot, then yeah. Go for it.

Dayton makes so much amazing stuff I have a problem deciding what approach to take.

Thanks, much appreciated, a lot of stuff actually, but perhaps it's best if I opened another thread for that, it'll probably clog this one even more. Actually been thinking about asking you for opinion once I get my own thoughts in line.

I'd like to ask the inverse of this. Or rather, is there any reason you can't use power monitors as living room speakers?

I like the simplicity of power speakers as my main system solution, but most are advertised as nearfield monitors. I find my Vanatoo T0s work fine in a larger room to my I guess undiscerning ears. Is there any reason other powered speakers wont?

The only limiting factor is output over distance. Depends on how loud do you like your music and wether your speaker will be able to keep up with it.

Genelec's consumer range are basically the analog 8000 series without the balanced connections and with smaller subs.

For nearfield, Westlake speakers were simply stunning. Sitting further back I was less a fan, stage got wider but incredibly shallow. Very accurate and monitor like, I prefer a bit of forward-ness to stay engaged.
