You got that right! It’s pretty subjective these days. That’s a session that could go on for hours with some of my clients. Objectively, is the dragon they’re seeing real? Objectively, no. Subjectively though, well yes. Yes it is. To them the dragon is really there and as real as anything else. Thanks for the kind words though, I really appreciate them.

I work in TV and have a degree in psychology so that's roughly the same?

I'm a broadcast engineer and I design and manage transmission kits used to move around video and audio for live sporting events. I also work on setting up contribution feeds for video channels so they can be distributed to subscribers. I've been a video guy my whole life. Went to film school, worked at the college media center, and came up through technical operations before moving into engineering.

My first degree was Biological Sciences but the thought of working in a lab full-time was terrifyingly boring so off to the Royal Navy I ran (sailed?). 16 years as a Warfare Officer, eventually being in charge of the "shoot the f***** down!" team, was too depressing so back to university I ran (flew actually, from somewhere off the coast of Africa). Nursing degree followed (too lazy to take on Medicine in my 40s) and I am now an Anaesthetic Nurse although I have been sucked into the vortex that is Intensive Care recently because of a certain pesky virus. Half the pay but twice the satisfaction, can't say fairer than that.

At the risk of sounding trite, thank you for your service, past & present.

What you've gone through in the past year is a different kind of warfare--not a lot of blood & physical trauma, but more than enough death & suffering.

We all owe a debt to a great many people for the last year. Health professionals have been in the limelight but there are so many that have proven themselves to be totally essential. Imagine the chaos if the staff in the supermarkets stayed home?

And you are correct, I have been far more up front and personal with death this last year than at any time in the previous 52. Hopefully that's now changing.

I am an engineer, I started as a sea going engineer in the merchant marine and did my degree after gaining a chief engineers certificate/license after which I did propulsion package design with a particular emphasis on shaft and system integration. Finding torsional vibration and such like rather boring I studied primarily combustion thermodynamics for my MEng and then worked as an engine emissions specialist and in electricity generation on thermal power plant emissions abatement including carbon capture/storage. Looking for an easier life I ended up switching to technical policy and now work as a lobbyist. Yes, it's the lowest of the low but it pays well and is actually an extremely interesting line of work. And it allows me to indulge my hobbies and interests without short changing the wife and kids etc.

Hello everyone! I was an elementary school teacher and administrator for a decade.

However, I accepted a new job at a children's publishing company. I am super excited!

I was an organic chemist. I got a PhD and then did a postdoc and towards the end of my postdoc I realized that I needed to change careers because the stress and anxiety of academic organic chemistry was ruining my life.

So during the pandemic I did an online program to learn how to code and now I'm a software engineer.

Why is this such a common story now, academic professionals turning coder? It makes me sad, honestly. But with the current state of academia, I really don't blame you.
