    Why is this?
    How can I fix it?
Why has someone not been fired at Microsoft for this huge fail?
    I demand satisfaction.

I've had multiple occasions that mine becomes unresponsive. A reboot seems to fix it...for a while. Not sure if that's what is happening on your system.

I've had this happen a few times. What I did was open the task manager with control alt delete and select cortana under processes, then right click and select end task. That relaunches the start menu for me and it works again.

    Ctrl + Shift + Esc
    End (Restart) Windows Explorer

    Super annoying when that happens.

After 40 years in the IT business I've found that the best fix for Microsoft swill is to not use their products at all. Seriously, would you tolerate an amp or hp that worked like this?

Shrug. I used to be a Mac user. It didn't work any better. Some Linux distributions are functionally more sound but lack in other areas.

If I didn't care about gaming, I'd probably be a permanent Linux user.

My problem is that I spend far too much of my work life with Windows problems; don't need to have them at home too. I always breath a sigh of relief when I have a project that needs a bunch of Red Hat servers. Get them working and forget them.

Over-all Windows 10 has been pretty stable for me, no real problems so far, and I can't complain about the price.

As far as Windows 10 goes with a few tweaks to make it my own I've had no problems with it. Not sure what this start menu problem is nor have I seen anyone I know complain about such a thing but computers are computers and problems are going to exist everywhere, even without changes being made by the user.

Until distros move on from the godawful clusterfuck that is X and people start caring enough about it to write cross-platform software and hardware manufacturers to fully support it with drivers I can't see myself using anything but Windows or OS X on a main driver.

Fun video of an ex-X developer talking about how and why Wayland came to be (and why X is a heaping pile of garbage)

... Have you tried turning it off and on again?

    Alternatively

    Sounds like a personal problem.

Same issue. Still unfixed for me. Was hoping the recent Service Pack would do it....

At least clicking on the Start button works now. My Windows key is still ineffective

There is a nice little program out there called Start10 by Stardock. You can configure it to have a Windows 7-like style or a better Windows 10 style, or you can customize it to what works best for you. You can download the demo for free for 30 days. I like it quite a bit. Once you get it customized to your liking it really simplifies things and keeps what you want organized and easily accessible. I am not sure if it will solve the Windows 10 start menu issue, but since it is an .exe it will over-ride windows 10's default start button/menu.

As mentioned earlier, Ctrl+Shift+Esc then go to "More details" and Restart your Windows Explorer process. It fixes it every time for me for a couple hours.

RE: Stardock - A better option in my opinion is the free Classic Shell. You can just install Classic Start Menu and nothing else if you want. I used it throughout the duration of Windows 8's existence prior to Windows 10. http://www.classicshell.net/

I've tried that. I've tried everything.

I'd wonder if my keyboard was broken but I doubt both of my Windows keys are kaputt

Do Windows key commands work? e.g. Windows + D minimizing all windows and revealing the Desktop? Does your keyboard have a gamer lock that lets you disable the key?
