    Sell to this man.

If you're reading this and have a 4-screw, you know that etched, glaring, ringing treble has always bothered you.

Deep down you also know your system isn't up to the task of driving them well, and that investing more in a dedicated speaker amp is dumb for a silly pair of headphones... and that getting a different pair of headphones altogether will probably sound better on your current system.

You don't really need a 4-screw HE6, but @brencho does. Send your pair to its proper home.

I read this as @brencho wants to screw a HE6.
    which is more disturbing.

Could you expand on this? At least on my phone, they appear to be black.

If the drivers were replaced it's unlikely to be with OG drivers - I'm sure they're using whatever they use with the 6SE. Some of the earliest 4-screw units have a blacker color, whereas later ones have a purple-ish hue.

I'm pretty sure there were some later 4-screw units with the purple-r housings before they switched to the new drivers, so color may not be indicative of 4-screw vs 6-screw or drivers used inside.

Thanks sealand. I think the repaired drivers make it a no go for me.

Maybe I'm wrong or received incorrect info, but the HFM rep I talked to at Socal canjam mentioned that the new HE6se still uses the original HFM driver? I know there were changes between 4 screw and 6 screw HE-6, but again, from what I was told, supposed to be the same drivers. Slightly different sound due to other differences in product.

Someone tested the HE-6 and HE-6se in the same setup on HF and confirmed that there are some differences, even volume wise, between the two headphones, with the whole setup being the same.

Not saying I or you are right/wrong (and I totally believe you) but was anyone able to show if the difference occurred over multiple samples? Any production and manufacturing process is going to have natural variation. Combined with HFMs previous/old reputation, known manufacturing inconsistencies (not saying bad sounding product, just inconsistencies), etc. I wonder what the ratio of the above difference may have been natural variation vs actual driver change? But I don't know the root cause as to why they sounded different.

From a different view, yes, companies changes things all the time unannounced. Employees don't know anything and everything. I've heard the same model HFM headphones on very similar setups before (granted not 100% the same) and the headphones themselves sounded slightly different in a way that wasn't say new earpads or whatever.

Anyways, only asking so much b/c I myself am split between HE-6 or 6se, modded HD800/s, or maybe the new Raal as my last ("expensive") headphone for a long time. And with HFM being what it is, I'd rather know more before diving in.

Believe the hfm reps at your own risk.
