Part of it might be the excess plankton. The issue of "grey" background with the Yggdrasil may be exaggerated. Of all the DACs on my DAC chart, maybe a two or three might have "blacker" blacks, all of them priced higher, significantly higher than Yggdrasil. And even then, we are talking about one aspect of audio reproduction of a dozen. Some people thought it might be the FETs on the output. It's hard to say. For all we know, it could be inherent to the chips being used with the internal I/V. I don't think the Yggdrasil should be immune from criticism, but I also don't think too much should be made of a minor thing that requires an additional expenditure of $8000 or more to "correct".

Finally, people who have assessed the Yggdrasil on only headphones have only a clue on its staging capabilities. The Yggdrasil's stage is upfront (you are sitting in row 10), but depth, layering, sense of venue, and precise localization are incredible.

If someone wants to evaluate residual playback system noise without influence from the recording, they need only play a wave file of perfect silence to hear or measure. such a file is trivial to create.

It's not noise. The "blackground" thing is a purely subjective phenomenon (feel free to mock this as audiophoolery). It's more like the older LCDs screens unable to get the dark pitch blacks. The canvas upon which the sounds are painted. It's obvious when comparing to my vinyl rig. Again, really splitting hairs.

Maybe the mosfet mist? Guess we can only find out if someone breaks warranty and mod their Yggdrasil with tube stage or Schiit offers its own tube upgrade

    lampidrasil anyone? :)

I have conducted extensive measurements in MS paint and have concluded that the iggys background color is cyan.

This discussion mostly started with the comparison with the E.A.R. Acute DAC at some number of thousands more than the Yggdrasil. It's output stage was tubes and fantastic. While it was better with blackness, it was just a bit, not so much better that I'd go buy 3-5 Yggys worth to upgrade it. The Yggdrasil's blackness is still pretty decent.

That said, I'll quote Jason in response to that ridiculous HF post: "It's a conspiracy! Run!!!!"

The Yggdrasil doesn't have as perfect blackness of few DACs, but probably better almost all the others.

The idea that the Yggdrasil doesn't have a blackness that matches the Gungnir Multibit? Absurd.

+1 for Yggdrasil imaging/soundstage with speakers. It's scary good.

I've said it before, and I will say it again: I love headphones, but I have no illusion they image like speakers.

Want to hear what the supercomboburrito can really do? Push back to nearfield monitors. Or, better yet, sit down in front of speakers in a well-set-up room. It can be scary, scary good.

Standard caveats apply: this is my opinion, I am biased, I haven't heard everything.

This version had a better black foreground.

I'm surprised more people don't do this mod. Really improves the blackness.
