Really love watches; and some posted here are really quite gorgeous pieces.

I myself recently bought a watch to celebrate my 30th birthday after having a really good two years where I got promoted, finished my Masters and got engaged. Decided on the IWC Portofino, and lucked out into an amazing deal through a friend's friend who worked at an AD. Bought it a few months back, and have been keeping it in the closet to wear it on my 30th last month.

Besides this one, I also have some value watches like an Orient, a Timex, and two Citizens. And a Luch one-handed watch, which is always a good conversation starter.

I'm now eyeing the Rolex Milgauss as my next big purchase to celebrate a milestone. I'm thinking of getting it for my 35th birthday, but my fiancee thinks I should get it for my 40th instead. :(

Ha ha, some watchnerd Instagram account posted this. Someone should probably photoshop an audio version, just like this was crappily edited for watches.

Combining said activities is one way to ensure your "main-spring" is perpetually fully wound ...

This is my great-grandpa's pocketwatch, which had been in the family some time before him (it dates from the early 1800s). It's been crappily treated and a new movement was clumsily put in sometime in the 50s. I'm having it restored and the original movement (which I still had) put back. It's taken the better part of a year. My father thinks this watch was lost, so I'm going to surprise him with it shining and keeping time (more or less, early 1800s remember) for his birthday.

The second of the two major watch shows for the year, Baselworld, just finished.

I wanted to mention one new model coming out by the excellent small German brand Nomos. These guys are killing it in terms of relatively affordable (still expensive, but more in-reach than mid-level luxury watches like Rolex, for example) mechanical watches. They do in-house movements, which is a thing nowadays and shows their commitment to watchmaking. Their style is clean, Bauhaus-influenced, easy to read and recognizable by those in the know, but under the radar otherwise.

For this year, they are bringing out the Club Campus line, which serves as an excellent "first nice watch". It's got a closed back and avoids bells and whistles, but gives you a well-made, mechanical movement and a very nice hand-wound watch at $1,650.

    They've gone with what's called a "California dial" and it's 38mm, a good, smaller size for a men's dressy watch. There's also a 36mm.

They have a bunch of other models, some more dressy or sporty, different dials and looks.

@Dr. Higgs has a nice Nomos, I hope he will kindly share a pic or a wrist shot of his!

The overall design is beautiful, but the numeral mix makes my brain hurt!

Yes. Interesting watch. I like the overall look. The mixed numerals was an intersting choice.

This is their more standard Nomos Club, with a slightly higher-end movement and sapphire window on the back to see said movement:

And while I'm posting about them, here is one of their higher end dressier watches:

I mean, they even have one in rose gold, but the heart of their line are sweet minimalist watches in the 2.5-3.5k range.

They have sizes ranging from 33mm (small) to 41mm (a good size for most men) in their various models.

Thinking about getting this as a 'grad watch' in lieu of a ring as a memorial piece for finishing my Master's degree.

As a personal aside, I'm so, so proud of my progress as a human being. I've spent most of my life being content being an underachiever, and I sincerely regret that mentality. I feel like I've done more in the last two years of my life than anything else. So to me, it'd commemorate more than just the accomplishment of finishing a masters program, it'd serve as a constant reminder of my growth as a person.

It's not expensive by watch standards at all, so I'd feel comfortable wearing it in most situations, which meets my criteria of "Have something you can use to remind and motivate yourself". At the same time, it's still nice enough that it'd pass scrutiny if people looked at it during formal events and such (because there are those kinds of people out there, but if they can hook you up with connections...).

I'm a sucker for open heart models, but it's hard to find ones that don't look like something out of Howl's moving castle.

If money were no issue, I'd spring for this Frederique Constant in a heartbeat (pun not intended).

Good looking piece, and congrats on the Master's.
