The cosmere is getting very, very interesting. If he can really tie it all together and the writing continues to improve across the board, we'll be talking about how amazing of a sci-fi fantasy epic he delivered 30 years from now.

I'm taking a break from space operas and reading Jason Stoddard's "Winning Mars". It's off to a good start.

The thing about space stuff is there is quite a bit good philosophy in them that I did not know they had.

Some are a bunch of bull-shit. But the classics are awesome.

Will check on Winning Mars though. Specially cuz Jason.

I actually finished reading Masters of Doom. It's basically the life story of the id guys, creators of Doom, Quake, etc. It was extremely enjoyable! I also have Jason's Winning Mars! Definitely need to read it!

I'm reading Black Halo, it's the second book in a fantasy series by Sam Sykes. He's Diana Gabaldon's son. It's not bad but not great. Something about evil underwater dwellers threatening surface people?

Next I might read Bands of Mourning or A Criminal Magic by Lee Kelly, it's an alternate history where american prohibition is about magic instead of liquor.

Reading the drama/meltdown threads on SBAF. Gripping stuff! Eagerly hoping for Return of The Slimy Admins!
    :pirate07:

Actually... Just finished The Hot House on the East River by Muriel Spark. She is one of my very, very very favourite authors, but this one was a bit weird.

11/22/63 is next up on my list.

I've always loved JFK conspiracy theories and need something to escape in at the moment.

Just picked up Morning Star. Hope it lives up to the first two in the series.

Last Chance to See by Douglas Adams and Mark Carwardine. Adams' fiction may take some getting used to in order to fully appreciate his genius, but his brilliance is unfettered in his non-fiction works, with the subtlest of cracks sliding in before you realise it. This is one author I really wish had been able to stay around longer, another being Terry Pratchett.

Started reading "A Little Life" by Hanya Yanagihara today... so far I'm hooked. Man Booker winners are hit and miss... usually I find them to be a novel in the classical sense, where you're drawn into a long, involved story. This one seems to be more into character development, presenting these thoughts about life and our involvement with others. Kind of reminds me of "A Visit From the Goon Squad" by Jennifer Egan which I (mostly) thoroughly enjoyed. f**k, that chapter about the kid talking about the silent pauses in songs, written as a PowerPoint presentation just killed. The book just made me think about all the little moments in life, and I'm feeling that way with A Little Life as well.

Read Kurt Vonnegut's "The Cat's Cradle" for the second time. Amazing story, awesome punch line (hint Newt explains it, Bokonon calls it foma).

Now reading Murakami's "What I Talk About When I Talk About Running." I saw the title of this book in this thread so yeah, I had to try it.

It's fantastic, I am so glad that I didn't read it before I started running though- as it makes a lot more intuitive and tangible sense now.

I'm currently ploughing my way through the second book of Murakami's "1Q84", as somehow I'd never read it- and thoroughly enjoying it.

1Q84 took me a year to finish. I had the first version, which was a giant tome. In the end a satisfying book, but man it tried my patience at times. Has anyone read Colorless Tsukuru?

Ah, I read such things on my Kindle. I was bloody glad that I read Grossman's "Life And Fate" on Kindle, as it's a 900 page epic.. would have been heavy on a crowded train, held one-handed. At current rates, I think it will take me three weeks to read 1Q84, I am actually forcing myself to slow down, as I am enjoying it, and don't want to miss nuances (that's my usual problem, gobbling books up). I only read for a couple of hours a day, while commuting, generally, but it's amazing how many damn books I get through.

I have read Tsukuru, and enjoyed it. As I dimly recall, it was more "Norwegian Wood" than "Kafka On The Shore", i.e. at the less bonkers end of things for Murakami, but still absorbing.

If people haven't read Bridge of Birds, it is a complete delight.
