You know the place Marvey (allegedly) went to today. It’s not well known to audiophiles as it rarely has plugs or powerstrips and sometimes water falls from the sky, which is terrifying if your amp is in Outdoor World. But I have been assured it does exist. Either that or HBO is doing a spin-off on Westworld. It should be obvious why there are no posts in the thread.

When I was in college I managed to “get by” with a Marantz 2220B receiver, some Marantz speakers and a Technics turntable. This lack of basic knowledge of what sounds good is inexcusable. IMHO.

Early on I asked what was the difference between a stand-alone CD player and a CD transport + external DAC. I had a few people say to forget the CD player and keep all my music on computer even though I said many times it wasn't an option.

HF, giving advice I never asked for

Curious about using guitar amps as tube monoblocs....
      1. murray
        murray
In most cases not a good idea. Old style guitar amps are not linear. Distortion is part of their “designed” flavour. There is a newer type of amp called FRFR (full range, flat response) that is more like a hi-fi amp. In that case all the distortion is modelled in the pre-amp.
        Jan 24, 2018
      2. Cspirou
        Cspirou
From my understanding the distortion tends to come when driven hard or with all the preamp settings turned up. The main limitation would be the transformer which is bandwidth limited. However if I swap it out with a hifi transformer I wonder what it sounds like.

Basically I am seeing if I can get 'cheap' monoblocs with used guitar amps.

Essentially that's what Dynacos are, just without the shape changing EQ. Fender amps with low, mids, and highs on 5 ain't flat.

My +20.00V/-20.02V power supply suddenly turned into a +20.00V/+1.76V supply. Its nice having a 8V DC offset.

I'd measure the output with a DMM and see if there is an offset. Might want to monitor it over time. If no offset then probably safe to go without a cap, though a capacitor does provide a bit of insurance.

Well i was kinda joking but nice to know it would work! The DC offset is unbalanced anyway. Right channel is 9V and left channel is 4V.

@atomicbob - I found out what caused the problem. CCS LEDs were installed backwards because I have the one set of LEDs where the green stripe is the anode instead of the cathode. This caused the bias current to run way too high and fried the negative regulator. I need to get it swapped. QFN chips suck.

The good news is that at least for crossovers, parts have a relatively high power dissipation tolerance. For more delicate stuff, proly best to stay away. Also, things look like shit when soldered with that crap.
