Reposting this from another thread. I read it when I first joined SBAF, but understand it a lot better now.

Inspiration is not a requirement. Pick a megathread in the equipment section with 2k+ posts and reply with, "How does this compare to the [similar item of your choice]", or "What's a good amp for this?" (bonus likes if the question had already been answered three times before the 1k mark), or "I'm SUPER excited about this!" If you want to switch things up a bit, pick a random statement from the thread and respond with, "+1. My thoughts exactly." Hit each thread at least twice per day and your post count will soar into the stratosphere in no time.

I made an account there for the same reason that you did. I still check up on Jason's and Mike's threads when they add something new. Other than that, I won't even lurk there anymore. I can get that level of shitposting on 4chan or Reddit, the difference being that those are sometimes entertaining.

It's fairly simple: SuperBAF = Changstar - Voldemike. Many of the founding members of Changstar are inactive or much less active now: Luis, Questhate, Fishski, Rhythmdevils, dBel, etc. Depending upon who you talk to, Voldemike either quit or received a discommendation Klingon style. Things change - that's the only thing you can count on in life.

Changstar at the beginning was mostly discussion centered around measurements, to put a stake in the ground. To define boundaries of what is acceptable sound, or more precisely, point out horrible sounding gear in an objective way. (Note that it is harder to use measurements to show us that something sounds good).

Over time, many of us became super dickish, with Voldmike being the worst by metaphorically taking craps on peoples' faces. We were seen as dickish elitist assholes, which we still are today, but maybe 5% less so. Changstar was clearly headed to becoming Head-Case. Therefore, at the urging of several people, I pressed the reset button and rebooted the Matrix.

I knew I had a problem on headfi when I would scroll through pages of "responses" looking for the avatars of people I trusted...

I was a little surprised to see the lemming like excitement over the new CA iems here...a lot of ooh ooh ooh me me me! Makes me wonder if there is a Phoenix Cycle that's required every so often to, as Marv puts it, reboot the Matrix. Or maybe you just need enough elitist asshole mods to make it unpleasant enough that shillboys don't stick around.

I'm also prepared to accept, due to my primary contribution being cash, computer savvy and not much else, that I may well be the bellwether for such a Phoenix cycle.

Well, that's awfully big of you. Applying Occam's Razor a sec here, it's also possible that rather than you having unearthly powers of haruspicy conferring the ability to add two and two to make 2^24, CA might just make quite nice IEMs. A lot of people have listened to them and liked them, and are thus unhealthily interested in what they come up with next.

There's also a certain kind of elitism whereby people feel compelled to hate things because they are popular in a peer group, to better showcase their own refreshingly independent thinking.

(The Andros do sound lovely, some of the nicest IEMs that I've heard. If the nozzles weren't too short and the capsules all nasty angular bits that hurt my ears, I may well have already bought a pair.. and it's easy to see why people would be interested in their new higher polygon models.)

As it happens I have a pair of Andros :). Some part of me did respond with an impulse to just get the new moar betterer one. I realized that that impulse, though informed to a degree by my familiarity with Andromeda, was actually uninformed and hasty. Especially because it doesn't seem like CA to drive upgrade-itis. Then again I suppose if I had the discretionary income it might be different.

    Hah, touche :)

I don't have a pair, as they fit me so terribly, but damn if they don't sound good- if I grit my teeth and press them into my ears. I think you're right about the upgradeitis too, giving decent warranty support and having a sensible returns policy does make it seem like they'd rather they got a rep for people being happy with their gear.

(..and seriously, unless you hate the tuning, do you really need an upgrade? For mobile use, they're probably "good enough" *cough* for most of us!)

I am absolutely eyeing up the new dynamics, though.. Sorry, but can't help that one, I have a weakness for a dynamic driver, and they look a lot more curvy and ear-friendly.

Actually that may be the least flawed reason to impulse buy from a vendor. I see Schiit and CA in that group.

Yeah, we have some major Schiit groupthink- but annoyingly, it's quite rational. They keep making well-engineered gear at sensible prices, and not bullshitting about it. I'm doing my best to branch out again, to showcase my stunningly original impulses, but it's hard going.

Folks I miss from the CS days:

    RhythmDevils
    Tari
    Questhate
    Fishski
    dBel**
    Sachu
    LFF
    Shipsupt**
    n3rdling**

** - still around but not as active AFAIK

A number of these guys were respected voices among the e-stat / ortho fringe. As a result, I think it's more common for the dynamics-are-best crowd to dump on planars (especially stats) without much in the way of objections here on SBAF, outside of Ojeg and n3rdling's ongoing throw down which is a good read but not much of an actual throw down haha.

It's nice to see HiFiMan and Code X fans, though.

...okay maybe not GUTB so much.

Meets are almost always a good thing regardless of which site/forum the members or host originate from. Usually the individuals are all mostly OK, and it's a chance to actually hear gear instead of listening to a million people telling you to buy everything under the sun.

I'm interviewing in Orange County this weekend. I'd love to be within an hour drive of meets! I've yet to get to one!

Meets are fun, though it's a lot harder for me to make it to my regional meets these days. I keep moving further away from DC chasing cheaper rent.

Best medicine for Hype-Fi Blues, play your favourite song and enjoy the moment.

You can have a Portapro or a Stax 007, it does not matter. The music matters...
