I really need to upgrade my multimeter which is currently the canuck equivalent of habour freight craptasticness, but can't really justify going up to a Fluke... is Klein a good middle ground?
I always wanted a Fluke but i don't feel it's justified for how often i use my current cheapo one. Sometimes it goes unused for months. Then again other times it's daily.
I think DMMs are /very/ sexy, especially the yellow ones.
But that's largely because I don't understand most of what they do! The mysterious is often sexy.
Mine's a cheapo one, and the only special thing it does is to measure peak current. Because I have actually needed to do that. to check the start-up draw of a fairly powerful pump.
For you guys using other DMM's, a good Fluke will be faster, more accurate, and not impart itself on the circuit. Look at the spec sheets and you might surprised the % of accuracy.
I looked at both too @Northwest, but I decided on a 117 because it is also True RMS. The only features not on the 87 is the 87 is rated up to 1000V and also has temperature. And @Armaegis, not sure, but Adam Savage uses the Fluke 115, it just one model down from the 117.
there's a local classified with a guy selling a 179 which seems like a step up from the 117, but I'm having trouble seeing what all the extra money gets me?
@Armaegis Accuracy, speed, and TrueRMS. True RMS is more accurate voltage for AC voltages. As well as durability and longevity. My 117 is also smaller and lighter weight than my old 77.
I was talking to my uncle who was an electrician at a factory that made UL listed products (water pumps). And he had to send his meter every so often to get calibrated so when the UL inspectors showed up they asked to see his calibration sticker on his meter.
