I guess used Schiit Saga S is cheapest way to get SE preamp with remote and if you are comfortable with digital volume control then you can get Flirc USB dongle to use with your laptop. Audirvana and Roon have decent volume control.

So you're asking for a passive attenuator with remote control. I don't know anything off the top of my head but that sounds like what you need. You wouldn't want a preamp, since I assume that just adds distortion to your stack. That makes it a very weird product that has powered remote, but passive volume control.

Thanks for your thoughts @roshambo123 . You've got the idea, but you're right, I don't think there is a cheap product that does this. @Ksaurav402 seems like the Schiit Saga might be the only product that would do the job, but more than I want to spend. Still, thanks for your thoughts.

Ok, how 'bout any recommendations for a cheap headphone amp with a remote?

If you think the Saga S would work, Jason said it will be on closeout or last call in the next day or two as it's being discontinued. "perfectly balanced 64-step relay volume and passive output option, as well as a remote control."

Khozmo makes a remote-enabled attenuator; maybe you can find one used for a reasonable price. I bought a non-remote version for around $200.
