I will continue to fulfill my duty with a sense of equity and ballerness, just as I did in days of yore when the Jolly Roger fluttered over the seas of Chang.

I strongly believe that faith should be crossed off all such lists. It's purpose is to get people to believe stuff which is actually unsupportable.

One could perhaps maintain faith with a small f, such as faith in each other, but faith with a big F... I'm not keen.

Man, what's wrong with believing in stuff that's not "supportable"? And what does that mean anyway

Cross off faith, then hope becomes wish and charity becomes pissing into the ocean. I think I will keep it (dullard that I am).

Firstly, we should tread lightly, as I don't want this to become a discussion on the merits of religion. That kind of thing can get out of hand quickly, and I'd rather keep this thread a place where folks can feel welcome. Plus I think it's just one of those "not at dinner parties [or on SBAF]" type of discussions. Like politics.

Secondly, we accept things on faith all the time, and I'm not even talking about religion per se. Take for instance your statement which implies everything needs to be supportable: I'm assuming you mean scientifically demonstrable, and there is nothing within the scientific method itself which determines what falls under its jurisdiction. How science is to be applied---its scope--- is determined by the scientist. That "everything must be proven scientifically lest it not exist" is, itself, a belief that one harbors prior to the discussion. It is the particular version of reality in which one has faith.

Philosophers can sit and navel gaze all day long, wondering if they are really a person or merely a brain in a jar with stimuli being fed to it. The only way out of solipsistic thinking is faith in a world beyond your own thoughts. Furthermore, I think it is necessary for human beings to have faith that life is---on some level---meaningful. Otherwise we all too quickly fall into despair when faced with the prospect of meaningless existence.

Point taken. I am inclined to get a bit heavy on that one. I'll desist!

I grew up in Houston in the early 80's. Went to Landrum Jr. High... was wondering if people are still taking people's shoes and bullying like back in the day. Specifically if Kenneth Berg ever graduated Jr high and stopped taking people's shoes?

I do not mind faith. Faith does not equal religion by definition. It depends per person.

My stance on humanity for instance is that most people on earth are good people. This faith in people gives me a positive bias that enables me to be a careful optimist. Call it what you want, faith matters in the small things of life that influence the bigger things in life. Faith enables optimism, trust and exceeding one's own limits.

Listen to Bach's "Toccata & Fugue" and tell me again you do not have faith in certain things in life. Even better, listen to "Ode To Joy" and find that divine spark.

Bringing us back down to earth with a headphones question (sorry). I know you're a fan of the Abyss, @MuppetFace so I thought I'd ask you straight. I spent some time with one this week... Is it normal for the bass to distort pretty badly at medium-high volumes? I tried a couple of amps (including one designed with the Abyss in mind) with the same results. Cheers!

No, that does not seem normal at all. The Abyss has the best bass of any headphone ever IMO.

OK thanks. Wonder if it was a duffer. Otherwise I thought it could have been great, though highly sensitive to positional OCD.

A silly poem I made up off the top of my head as an answer...

So many mistakes through the years that I mourn,
A temptation is there, my past self to warn.
But for better or worse, in some strange way
These have made me the person that I am today.

So all in all, I'd probably just say:
"Hang in there, it'll all be okay."

Feeling poetic today? It has a Emily Dickinson vibe to it. Not bad at all.
