That means... I need more DACs to find the perfect match :) I shall not mention this at home... otherwise I have to move into the garden shed. At least there is electricity.

Mjolnir 2 if you want to use a wide variety of headphones.

Elise is a bit better with staging depth and is more liquid sounding, but is otherwise somewhat soft and fuzzy sounding, and it's most severe deficiency is a noticeable sense of low-end roll off and lack of dynamics. Mjolnir 2, in comparison, hits like a freight train, is better extended, maybe more resolving, but can be a bit dry sounding depending on your choice of tubes.

Ultimately I enjoyed the Mjolnir 2 more.

    Hands,

I'm enjoying my HD650 with the Mojo 2. What would be a sensible upgrade to the stock tubes?

I don t want to spend $300 on tubes though....would LISSt be an upgrade to the stock tubes?

    A) Burning in an amp like this isn't going to transform it into something it is not. It might help some at best, but, again, no total transformations. Just like putting a million tubes and a billion adapters on it isn't going to transform it either, unless you're totally delusional. It's a good but not great amp, but is priced right, and while I'm sure some will prefer it over the Mjolnir 2, I did not for the reasons mentioned above. I really don't like soft amps that lack balls and dynamics. They bore me.

    B) It was a loaner unit. I'm sure the owner put plenty of hours on it, as did those borrowing it before me, and so on.

If you doubt me, buy both yourself and compare. I would encourage that if you have the time and cash, because you really should only trust your own findings!

Usually Holland-made stuff is a good way to go. Pretty popular if you want some extra warmth to the sound.

    These might be good: http://www.upscaleaudio.com/6922-6dj8-7308-pcc88/philips-pcc88-7dj8/

Assuming they aren't rebrands, usually stuff from RCA, CBS/Hytron, Westinghouse (good value), Brimar, perhaps Mullard, Amperex, etc. usually have some good sounding tubes. Really depends on your preferences. Unfortunately, I can't say much, because I don't know how the Mjolnir 2 sounded with stock tubes.

It's a good option under $1K, but I can't necessarily say it would be the best for you or in all scenarios. Nor have I heard all amps in that price range. Just one I don't think people should overlook.

My Elise is in the house. I've been listening to it extensively over the last two days, primarily with my (sorta)-modded TH600s, connected to my Denon DP300F TT with DL110 cartridge (just to give some context). These are by far the best these headphones have ever sounded, though I am still in the blissful honeymoon stage so it'll be a while before I can make any useful assessments.

Oh, and it looks absolutely stunning.

This thread is pretty quiet....I take it most at this price point are looking elsewhere? Seems like a good mid-fi option for hd800(s) owners based off feedback here and elsewhere....

    Hey guys,

I'm quite new here. Reading lots of arguments regarding excessive tube rolling here. Quite interesting. I like people pointing out stupid things straightforward without hesitation, good for noobs like me to learn.

One solid fact from my experience as the owner of the Elise is that I do feel the big step-up improvement when rolling some certain tubes like EL3N + GEC 6AS7G.

To be honest, although some Elise tube rollers on the head-fi do get hyped quite often and spam the thread by updating their personal hyped review, I do think a better tubes combo is necessary. I also did similar comb as @Marvey Mullard 6080WA + Tung-sol 6sn7, but the sound doesn't satisfy me quite much as EL3N+ GEC 6AS7G.

Maybe some of you guys here are professional enough to point me out that I might prefer distorted tube sound, but I wouldn't reckon that because I do have the experience of other amps like Lehmann linear, Beyerdynamic a20, A2, V281, WA22 etc matching with my T1. So far, Elise goes the best with my T1. (good SQ yet musical)

Having said that, I'm against excessive tube rolling like "Christmas tree" or "putting an external power supply to the tubes" as well. Neither aesthetically nor sonically. I totally agree with some guys opinion that some elise owners on head-fi thread just make the handsome Elise look like shit.

Elise is my first tube amp, but sometimes I do feel a little upset because when I'm so satisfied with the sound from EL3N+ GEC 6AS7 while GEC 6AS7 is so rare and expensive at the moment. I guess maybe looking for another better tube amp with more popular and available tubes is a better option in the future.

According to http://www.feliksaudio.pl Feliks Audio releases a new model (Euforia for $1400). It seems the Elise also gets an upgrade:

revised noise cancelling module in the power circuit, even further improving resistance to external interference and limiting any background noise.

If it does what I hope I wish they had implemented this 1-2 years before - might have lowered by blood pressure significantly.

What kind of seller would post this in his For Sale thread after the sale?: "Yup, it was bought last week. I'd recommend a new Euforia from Feliks Audio, or MONOTOR solid state amp from Little Labs. Both are comparable and better in multiple ways."
