Looking to buy a matched pair of “holy grail” tubes for use with the Sonic Frontiers SFD-1 MKII. I’m really just curious to hear for myself why it has the “holy grail” nickname. If you have a pair for sale, please pm me!

I don’t want to dissuade you from seeking these tubes out as I feel everyone should hear things for themselves and make their own determination, my advice is that hopefully, you can try or obtain a pair without paying the Uber ridiculous prices these are going for these days. In my opinion, having owned these before, you are just as good getting any other vokshod or reflector 6N23P from this era from 70s or earlier, and rather put your money towards real holy grails (of the Telefunken, Siemens, Brimar, etc.). That said, good luck in your search and hope your curiosity is abated.

I also didn’t see what the fuss was about with the Russian tubes and would recommend finding an affordable pair to determine if the expensive ones are worth purchasing.

Along similar lines, Brent Jesse has affordable pairs of “butt ugly” Amperex bugle boys ($110):

If you like those I’d also recommend exploring the Mazdas, I think they’re similar to the Amperex but even better and ended up being my favorites. I never tried the Telefunken, too expensive for the remaining vintage stock.

This is why I love this community, I really appreciate the feedback guys. Sometimes I get blinded by intense curiosity. (Which has led to some regrettable purchase decisions in the past lol) In this case it would be pretty difficult for me to audition these tubes first, but I agree perhaps I should think twice and consider some more affordable alternatives first. (voskhod rocket etc.) If anyone has a matched pair of Voskhod rockets, I’d love to buy those to try out as well.

Two years ago I got a nice NOS 1975 Reflektor 6N23P-EV (not 'grail', so under $25 incl. shipping) from Bulgarian ebay seller elecments13. Good transaction, I'd buy from him again.

    https://www.ebay.ca/sch/i.html?_ssn=elecments13&_oac=1&_nkw=6n23p

Note he says his matched pairs are based on measurements not date or even producer. If you want 2 from the same factory, you could write to him to specify.
