This is my first post to SBAF.

I joined SBAF for three main reasons; Reading posts I really love how respectful everyone seems to be without flamers. I love how experimental people are and willing to mod headphones to make them sound better. And the main reason is to thank Sorrodje for coming up with the Superdupont Resonator.

I recently bought a HD 800. At the used prices these are going for now i think they are incredible value. I compared the HD 800 at length to the 800s, the HE 1000, the Audeze LCD 3 and 4, two of the Stax and the Abyss. I listened through a range of different amps and apart from the peak and aggression that the HD 800 will sometimes present with some music there was so much magic on most of the music. For it to be able to compete to my ears with this other stuff i thought was amazing. There were aspects of some of the other headphones that i preferred (the bass of the Abyss, the timbre of the he 1000, the lack of grain of the Stax) but there were always enough things i prefer on the HD 800 to make me think about and want to listen to this headphone the most.

The only mods i've tried so far were the rug liner which made the HD 800 lose some of the magic that i love about it. I then tried the Shure tip (with the white plastic pipe still in the tip) which was good but a bit too dead for me.

Then i spent 5 hours making Sorrodjes wonderful Superdupont Resonator with the felt, business card and creatology foam and the sound is overall now pretty wonderful. The peak seems almost gone (i'd still love it to take off a little more of the 6khz brightness (if that's what i'm hearing) . And in an ideal world i'd like slightly more 1 kHz presence and slightly richer and more powerful bass (like the Fostex 900) but i'm using a modified Speedball Crack so i'm trading some resolution with this amp (in comparison to the Cypher Labs Prautes, Sennheisers own amp and even i guess the woo) but the modified Crack is the best partner so far for me with the hd 800 as they are now.

Now comparing my 2 year old very well run in and new ear pads HD 800 to the HD 800s and with the 3 layer Superdupont Resonator I found the differences really interesting. The HD 800s was much more forgiving with on most material a more beautiful and richer midrange. But the soundstage of my HD 800 was larger. They had much more detail. The sound seemed clearer. The bass was leaner but the HD 800 had a lot more magic to me. The 800s sounded different in the bass to the rest of the range. Like it was a multiway loudspeaker and this seemed to be obscuring a lot of the sense on good recordings of being in the studio or room with the musician. Sorrodje's modified HD 800 made me feel like i was listening much closer to the master tape and it gave the impression that i could hear the reel to reel tape running over the heads and that the music was all in unison. Anyway a bad explanation but i wanted to try to explain what i was hearing.

I have three questions for Sorrodje if i may.

in the Sorrodje Resonator i made i used a glossy business card as the material for the paper part that is farthest from your ears. Is this in your experience the best material to use? Would a matt card or slightly thinner card give better results?

Are there any other mods that are recommended being used with the Superdupont Resonator to improve the sound further without killing the Soundstage or clarity which i love?

Would making the hole larger in the resonator improve the sound further or are there any other materials which show promise?

I ask this last question because looking at the HD800s superficially (I took the dustcover off but did not peel back the gauze covering the driver and the central donut because it was a floor model and was for sale) it looks almost like the shore tip from Sorrodjes earlier resonator. It seems to have a larger diameter hole than the Shure tip with the white stick still in but it seems to have that type of sponginess and looks like it has tooling marking on it just like the shore tips i tried using.

Sorry for the long post but i just wanted to share my impressions and thank Sorrodje for making my headphones so much more pleasurable to listen too.

May i have 2 pairs of your Superdupont resonators? I'm living in Melbourne, Australia.

The ones i made used a circle cutting tool but the outer donut i had to do by hand with scissors so not perfectly round.
