Artificial creativity sounds like an oxymoron, but since signing up for Dall-e 2 I've become curious about AI's ability to generate something that's never existed before. When it comes down to it, it's quite easy to generate random patterns that have no meaning or significance. However, to generate instructions from a human language, sort through countless associated images and then come up with something more or less unique.... it fascinates me.

    It's also fun.

Who else messes around with AI and art/design/music/poetry/prose etc? It would be cool if you could share the resources you use and examples of what has been created. Here are a few examples Dall-e 2 has generated for me, in addition to my SBAF avatar.

    Prompt:
“a painting of the bust of a thin woman wearing headphones in the art deco style of klimt including gold leaf and geometric patterns”

    Prompt:
“a photo realistic image of Bach as a muppet”

    Prompt:
“an engraving in the style of durer of an astronaut playing a lute”

I use AI quite often to do things like excellent slow motion, upressing, create depth passes of footage, simple rotoscoping work, and "organic" paint treatments in animation. I've just started working with Deep Motion/Sletchfab/Miximo. It is crazy what AI allows you to do now - it is imperfect at this point, but it already allows you to do simple work that replaces super expensive meta stages/tracking suits/videogrammetry capture. I'm loving it.

The prompt-based stuff is really interesting. I am excited to see how this develops.

I know next to nothing about this stuff but my wife works in the art world and recently told me about an artist, Refik Anadol, who is apparently at the forefront of using machine learning to produce works of art, including projections of visual materials on to buildings. Some of it's quite attractive, aesthetically (i.e. not just conceptually, although I need to learn more about it to form an opinion).

He seems to make use of images scanned from various archival repositories, including from the LA Philharmonic, the digital collection of the Museum of Modern Art, and photos of Antoni Gaudí's Casa Batlló building (here on instagram: https://www.instagram.com/p/CdLcYb2j9Y9/)

Those who might be interested in him, and his art, might like to check out some of the following:

I must say I am impressed (untrained, uncultured and underdeveloped in terms of art appreciation) with what Dall-e 2 produces. Given the recent noise around the nature of consciousness of an AI and the subject of rights, it will be fascinating to see the impact on the legal constructs of copyright and how they develop as AI develops.

There will be complicating elements such as the infusion of human creativity into AI through various mechanisms such as training on an individual's art (and other aspects of the individual) to inject a bias/originality deliberately for that artist as a producer of original art, and how such training may be 'originally' done by the artist, such that it is not duplicable through the final works.

    Fascinating stuff.

I'm pretty deep into MidJourney. Both because the results of this text-to-image program is addictive and fun but also because, as a creative, I have a feeling being able to leverage some form of prompt-crafting (for video and music) is probably going to be an important tool in the future.
